Lewis Builders of Carmel Specializes in Designing and Building Custom Homes, Remodels and “Aging-in-Place” Renovations

John Lewis found his calling as a college student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, though it wasn’t how you might expect a career path to unfold.

Carmel, CA, May 18, 2017 — John Lewis found his calling as a college student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, though it wasn’t how you might expect a career path to unfold.

Flash forward to 2017, as Lewis is now the founder of Lewis Builders, which specializes in designing and building custom homes, doing design/build remodels and “aging-in-place” renovations for retirees, older people and those with health concerns. His firm employs 15 people and moved into new offices in The Barnyard Shopping Center in Carmel.

“We have a passion for helping those who are aging and just want to keep their dignity and independence in their own homes,” says Lewis, who recently added two partners to the firm, Kenny Boyd as Chief Financial Officer and Scott Julian as Chief Operations Officer. “We’re trying to educate the public on design/build and aging-in-place.”

Design/build, simply put, is the same company doing the design and construction, from conception to completion, of a custom home or remodel. Design/builders have a better conception of the real costs of a project and how to fit that into a client’s budget; it saves significant time in the overall project; and the construction team works collaboratively with the design team.

Aging-in-place is customizing homes with innovative, aesthetically pleasing solutions that alleviate the physical challenges of aging or injury.

It’s not just a specialty, Lewis Builders is a credentialed expert in CAPS (Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist). A program of the National Association of Home Builders, the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation program teaches the technical, business management, and customer service skills essential to competing in the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling industry: home modifications for the aging-in-place.

“When people discover that cost of living in an assisted-living facility can be $10,000 or $20,000 a month, making modifications to their own homes becomes a no-brainer,” he says. “The ultimate result is that people are able to live comfortably and safely in their homes into their later years, rather than moving into costly assisted-living facilities.”

Born and raised in Monterey County, the youngest of five children, Lewis’s passion for the creative process of designing and building custom homes and remodels that started with small repair jobs in college, has now become his life’s work.

He realized that his passion and talents were for the entire creative process, seeing what others couldn’t, taking on challenging design and construction issues, and developing his expertise at flipping homes successfully.

Lewis’ first construction job was in 1995 in Salinas, but his first significant project, one that launched him on the “entrepreneurial side of the business,” was in 2002 when he built a small, two-bedroom bed and breakfast unit for the owner of the winery where he worked in Templeton, California.

That project resulted in a referral for another job. It also got him rethinking his career path.

“For the first time I was making more money in construction, than making wine,” he says. But he kept at his viticulture studies and in time he moved to Napa to work at a winery. But he also became a licensed contractor and incorporated as owner of his own firm, JL Home Solutions.

In Napa, he worked by day at the winery and vineyards and on construction on nights and weekends. Once again, he found he was making more money doing construction on nights and weekends than his winery job.

He moved back to Monterey County in 2008, but the recession was hitting the country hard and construction jobs were few and far between, so Lewis started a business as a property inspector.

And in order to establish himself in the community and build a foundation for his construction business that was temporarily dormant, Lewis dove into the business community, taking leadership courses and joining the boards of such agencies as the Central Coast Builders Exchange, Charitable Trust Committee for Monterey County Association of Realtors, Planning Commissioner, Rotarian, and Salinas Chamber of Commerce.

It was as a property inspector that he met one of his partners, Kenny Boyd. Lewis met Boyd when he was tasked to inspect a duplex Boyd had purchased. The two, who both attended Cal Poly and were both majoring in ag business, not only hit it off, they partnered in a real estate project, which lead to more projects, and to eventually becoming partners in Lewis Builders.

Lewis met Julian, who at the time owned his own medical equipment company, through his involvement in aging-in-place design and construction. Julian also recently became a partner in Lewis Builders.

Lewis closest and most intimate partnership was the result of an almost chance meeting at a three-day financial seminar in San Diego. That’s where Lewis and his future wife Tammy met when they were involved in a group exercise together.

“We both discovered we had found the one,” says Lewis about the encounter. “We went there to find out about financials and instead we found love.”

John and Tammy were married six months later and they now have two sons, 2 1/2 years old and six months old. And, Tammy, in addition to her primary duties as a mother, is now also Lewis Builders’ Creative Director.

Emerging Songwriter/Singer Ashley J Announces New Steamy Single “Trapped,” Due Out May 19th!

Pop songwriter/singer Ashley J launches a new chapter in her emergence as contemporary pop artist with a brand new single, “Trapped.”

Orlando, FL, May 16, 2017 – Pop songwriter/singer Ashley J launches a new chapter in her emergence as contemporary pop artist with a brand new single, “Trapped.” The inescapable and smoky single is set for an independent release on all digital and streaming platforms May 19, 2017 via her production imprint, Bombshell Music, Inc.

“Trapped” was written by Ashley J, who teamed up with legendary songwriter/producer and multi-platinum Grammy and Emmy winning, Narada Michael Walden, who produced her steamy single. Laced with mid-tempo snaps, shadowy synths and soft whispers; “Trapped” highlights a deep infatuation with a new partner. Ashley’s sultry pipes gradually build a gravitating tension throughout the song, until it hits the exciting and uncontrollable bridge which reveals her scintillating and broad vocal range.

Walden, who has produced a slew of hit records for vocal superstar Diva’s like Aretha Franklin, Diana the late Whitney Houston, among others, gives the burgeoning songstress a five-star rating, “Ashley J is a real American sweetheart with a big voice and lots of energy! She has soul and her beautiful smile lights up the room,” he noted.

For music fans of Selena Gomez, Sabrina Carpenter and Demi Lovato, “Trapped” offers her fans a compelling impression for what to expect from Ashley J’s debut EP coming out later this year.

Last year, Ashley J made her entry into the pop scene with her romantically charged single, “Dare Ya” which peaked at #3 on the Official European Independent Music Charts. The music video also received support and praise from Paste Magazine, EDM Droid, and Media Place.

In 2015, her debut solo single “One and One” reached Billboard’s Top 20 Dance Charts. She followed that up with another dance record, “Cali” (Ralphi Roasio Remix) which debuted #1 on Billboard’s Breakout Chart the first week of release.

About Ashley J:

Growing up in Orlando, the multi-talented songwriter/singer was influenced by Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and her all time musical hero, Dolly Parton, Ashley J started songwriting and singing at a very early age. Her musical style intertwines unapologetic pop with enticing electronic melodies. She earned a BA degree in Business Law from the University of North Texas and attended the Dr. Phillips High School of Performing Arts in Orlando, where she scored leading roles in theatre, dance and musical productions.

Phoenix based Singer-songwriter Jonathan Cavier Announces Release of New Full-Length Album Blue Room On May 12

Blue Room is Cavier’s second full-length album, and the followup to 2016’s Premier release and contains the new single “When You Come Around”

Los Angeles, CA, May 10, 2017 – Pop singer-songwriter Jonathan Cavier is preparing for the release of his second solo album, Blue Room, which will be released via iTunes and all major digital outlets on May 12. Blue Room’s first single, “When You Come Around,” was recently released on April 21 and the video for the song will be released next week in advance of the full album. On “When You Come Around,” Sting’s influence can be heard as Cavier passionately sings about his desire to connect with someone special over an affective acoustic melody. There is raw emotion in both Cavier’s voice and lyrics on Blue Room showing an artist that has a deep strength in communicating emotion to his listeners. Blue Room’s sound is a continuation and maturation of the sound from Cavier’s first solo album, Premier, as both of these releases blend together pop influences from the 80s, 90s and music of today. On Blue Room, Cavier continues to “transport listeners to colorful three-minute worlds,” a process he started with the 2016 release of Premier.

Cavier’s time in the atmospheric pop duo EyeTalk gave him years of experience and exposure in countries all over the world. With the maturation of his songwriting and composition and the wide array of generational influences on Blue Room’s ten tracks, one can see an artist truly coming into his own.

About Jonathan Cavier

Phoenix-based singer-songwriter and pop performer Jonathan Cavier is no stranger to writing catchy tunes that blend wide-ranging influences into a multi-faceted yet cohesive sound. Originally from Northern California, Cavier (“cav-AIR”) moved to Phoenix, AZ where he performed as Alan Clark in the atmospheric pop duo, EyeTalk. Over the course of 10 years and five albums, this venture saw their music reach international audiences in Italy, the UK, and Australia. After five albums and hundreds of shows played throughout the US, Alan Clark has reintroduced himself under the pseudonym Jonathan Cavier. With one solo album, Premier, already under his belt, Cavier further defines his sound on 2017’s 10-song release entitled Blue Room. In addition to his musical endeavors, Cavier is a semi-professional tennis player and a member of the USTA and IFT. Cavier says practicing and playing in tournaments is “the fountain of youth.”

Roadcase Royale to Release Brand-New Single Not Giving Up on May 12th

Not Giving Up marks the band’s second single and follows their debut single release Get Loud

Los Angeles, CA, May 10, 2017 – Rock and R&B-influenced group Roadcase Royale will be releasing a brand new single entitled Not Giving Up on May 12th.  The band is fronted by Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer Nancy Wilson of Heart and Liv Warfield of Prince’s New Power Generation, and also includes members from each of their respective bands.  Not Giving Up is a hard rock song that contains politically charged lyrics, following in the footsteps of the band’s debut single, Get Loud, which debuted at the January 21st Women’s March. The video for “Not Giving Up” will also be released next week via the group’s YouTube channel.

The track opens with Ryan Waters iconic bluesy guitar riff followed by the powerful entrance of the full band. The intensity level builds up during the first verse and climaxes at the chorus with the return of the same driving guitar riff and Warfield’s searing vocals.  The song’s refrain sends a message to stay strong in today’s politically divisive times, saying, “We watch you building up the wall, We’re waiting just to see it fall,
I’m saying we’re not givin’ up, givin’ up, no.”  With powerful lyrics and their full-tilt musicianship, Roadcase Royale will be “Not Giving Up” anytime soon.

Nancy Wilson had this to say about the “Not Giving Up”:

“The first time I listened to Liv and Ryan’s track of Not Giving Up I was floored by the deceptive simplicity and the powerful message of their song. I could hear the potential to make it our own. I knew right away we would be able to take that song not just for a test drive but straight onto the big rock race track!”

More about ROADCASE ROYALE:

Led by former Prince collaborator Liv Warfield and Nancy Wilson, co-founder of Heart, ROADCASE ROYALE has a rich background in rock and R&B. Warfield, Wilson, and their bandmates bring their decades of experience from the upper echelon of the music industry to ROADCASE ROYALE, along with a renewed sense of direction and drive. Joining Wilson and Warfield are Warfield’s lead guitarist and musical director Ryan Waters and Heart veterans Dan Rothchild (bass), Ben Smith (Drums) and Chris Joyner (Keys). Each of these members shine in ROADCASE ROYALE with their various sensibilities creating the group’s sensitive, passionate, and driving rock and R&B sound.

Souleye’s “Hip Hop Medicine” Single Feat. Dustin Tavella is Available Now!

Just in time for summer, conscious hip hop artist SOULEYE drops a new single from his forthcoming studio album WILDMAN.

Los Angeles, CA, May 04, 2017 — Just in time for summer, conscious hip hop artist SOULEYE drops a new single from his forthcoming studio album WILDMAN. “HIP HOP MEDICINE” is the kind of infectious, upbeat dance hit that makes summer fun. For this track, producers JESSE MOLLOY and DAVE VEITH, better known as the duo Crush Effect, recruited a familiar voice.

Pop singer DUSTIN TAVELLA provides a soulful yet upbeat lyric quality to the song, which he describes as a song with a “throwback feel,” recalling summer dance hits like those beachhouse hits from MTV’s glory days. Dustin credits Jesse and Dave with his participation.

“Jesse Molloy had approached me about getting on the track with SOULEYE,” Dustin reveals. “I love everything that Jesse and Crush Effect produce so it didn’t surprise me when I head the record and how infectious it is.”

“Hip Hop Medicine” is featured as a bonus track on WILDMAN, which drops on streaming and online June 27. With its fun beats, clever hook and sing-along lyrics, “Hip Hop Medicine” is a single with the makings of the breakout hit of 2017.

Even with the popular focus and catchy hook, Souleye’s conscious style still shines through, while his effortless lyrics showcase his deep roots as a master freestyler. Much of the new album was written during a three-day period, in a makeshift studio off the Vancouver coast. The almost freestyled lyrics, backing tracks and vocals represent the height of genre-bending artistry of a Souleye song, something Dustin loved to be a part of.

“As an artist, it’s always fun to collaborate and be a part of something with someone who is also so passionate about creating,” Dustin says. “It’s obvious that Souleye loves his craft, and that just makes me appreciate these kinds of projects ever more.”

Indie Rapper Souleye Delivers Treatment for your Mind and Spirit

With New Single, “Hip Hop Medicine” Feat. Dustin Tavella, Out May 5th!

Los Angeles, CA, May 01, 2017 – Conscious hip-hop artist, Souleye drops his brand new single “Hip Hop Medicine” featuring Dustin Tavella on May 5, 2017. This is the third single off his upcoming album, Wild Man expected for release in June 2017.

Infused with contemporary hip-hop soundscapes and bass heavy rhythms, producer Crush Effect seamlessly blends Souleye’s well-crafted original rhymes with his velvet-like vocals over a sonically searing beat in the new single. Souleye lyrically unloads a multi-layered storytelling consciousness that awakens the minds of humanity with great encouragement. His stream of consciousness style is both conversational and thought provoking.

Pop and R&B artist Dustin Tavella enters the track with his infectious hook continuously encouraging ‘don’t you stop it.” “Hip-Hop Medicine” is Souleye’s musical remedy to strengthen listeners’ passion and support, liberating them from their perceived limitations.

Souleye’s previous single “Snow Angel” featured his wife Alanis Morissette, and received tremendous support from their fan base and media outlets nationwide. “Snow Angel” was also reviewed by Fuse TV, Just Jared, Above Average Hip Hop and more. The Fresh Committee noted “Souleye’s lyrical ability and uncanny flow is felt immediately after Alanis finishes belting the powerful hook. The song’s electronic vibe provides the perfect playground for Souleye to showcase his diverse musical abilities over ethereal electronic glitches.”

With the perfect mix of hard hitting basslines and Souleye’s distinct lyrical flow, “Hip Hop Medicine” is a natural and fiery single to build on his fans’ anticipation for the forthcoming, Wild Man.

Vendange Carmel Inn and Suites Announces New Wine-Themed Room in Partnership with Award-Winning Mesa Del Sol Estate Retreat and Winery of Greenfield, California

Vendange Carmel Inn and Suites has announced a new wine-themed room designed by owner and winemaker Ann Hougham of award-winning Mesa Del Sol Estate Retreat and Winery of Greenfield, California.

Carmel, CA, April 27, 2017 — Vendange Carmel Inn and Suites has announced a new wine-themed room designed by owner and winemaker Ann Hougham of award-winning Mesa Del Sol Estate Retreat and Winery of Greenfield, California.

Hougham decorated the room in a country vineyard theme, with muted floral print shams and bedskirts on the bed, color photographs of Arroyo Seco gorge and the Mesa Del Sol vineyards, a ladder-back wooden chair and antique, pine-trimmed mirror, wine paintings, a tray with two of Mesa Del Sol’s award-winning wines and two wine glasses.

The room boasts sleek, modern bathrooms with imported Spanish marble. Sleeping areas have memory foam-top beds, deluxe linens, and high-definition flat-screen televisions.

Mesa Del Sol joins 13 other wineries in partnership with Vendange to sponsor wine-themed rooms. From the McIntyre Vineyards’ room with its impressive 100-year-old grapevine section to J. Lohr’s wine barrel on the balcony, every winery’s room offers a signature luxury experience. The participating wineries include: Blair, Cima Collina, Dawn’s Dream, Galante, Holman Ranch, J. Lohr, Joullian, Manzoni, McIntyre, Otter Cove, Tudor, Twisted Roots, and Ventana.

Mesa Del Sol is located on a beautiful upland promontory at the junction of three major watersheds, and is on property that was once believed to have been a stage stop for travelers headed overland to Carmel Valley or up the Arroyo Seco River to the Mission San Antonio.

Since 2000, Hougham has continued to restore the 14-acre vineyard estate and produce award-winning grapes for many celebrated Monterey County vintners. The estate buildings have been lovingly restored, the grounds beautifully landscaped and crops now include fragrant Provence Lavender used in sachets, lotions and oils.

Lean rocky soils nurtured with organic farming practices and irrigated from a thriving trout pond feed the vineyards. The hot arid days of the uplands and cool marine night air of the Pacific provide a perfect setting for the grapevines.

Past harvests have brought Mesa Del Sol accolades; most notably the 2002 Hunter Hill Mesa Del Sol Syrah took “Best in Show” at the 2005 California State Fair Wine Competition. The Syrah was chosen as number one from a field of 2,800 wines.

Current releases have been garnering 90-point-plus reviews from Wine Enthusiast including a 93-point score for her 2011 Syrah. Winemaker Ian Brand, Mesa Del Sol’s winemaker since 2011, handcrafts magic into every bottle.

Current Mesa Del Sol Varietals include Syrah, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Dessert Zinfandel and Prima Rosso (a blend of estate-grown fruit).

About Mesa Del Sol Estate Retreat and Winery

Located on a beautiful upland promontory at the junction of three major watersheds, Mesa Del Sol has been a favorite location for more than a century.

One small stone building, a water house, and a portion of one of our cabins date back to the 1800’s and are believed to have been a stage stop for travelers headed overaland to Carmel Valley or up the Arroyo Seco River to the Mission San Antonio.

Around the turn of the century, a health center with various small cabins was developed. The hot dry pure air of the Arroyo Seco Highlands became a soothing setting for those with tuberculosis and other maladies. Teddy Roosevelt was a visitor and stayed here during that time!

In 1927, California Senator Fred Weybret purchased the property and moved his family here. The main house was constructed in 1936 out of local redwood and Carmel stone. The Senator and his family lived here until his death in 1945 and the land passed on to a noted Monterey County lettuce baron from Salinas, Steve Rianda, and his talented artist wife, Mary.

With their three children, the Rianda family lived on the property, named it Mesa Del Sol, and went on to beautify the mesa, adding a pool and other out buildings and cultivating the grounds and gardens over the next 25 years.

In 1998 another Salinas-born agricultural innovator Jake Hougham, purchased the land. The vineyards were planted and the trout pond was reinstalled at that time.

Since Jake Hougham’s death in 2000, his wife Ann has continued to restore the 14 acre vineyard estate and produce award-winning grapes for many celebrated Monterey County vintners. The estate buildings have been lovingly restored, the grounds beautifully landscaped and crops now include fragrant Provence Lavender used in sachets, lotions and oils.

Lisa Hazen and Don Dasher Open CycleBar Westgate

For much of Lisa Hazen’s life, she has been immersed in competitive swimming —she is, after all, a four-time All-American swimmer for Stanford University. Her husband Don Dasher is an avid outdoor bicyclist, but not obsessively so.

San Jose, CA, April 25, 2017 – For much of Lisa Hazen’s life, she has been immersed in competitive swimming —she is, after all, a four-time All-American swimmer for Stanford University. Her husband Don Dasher is an avid outdoor bicyclist, but not obsessively so.

So there’s probably a little bit of wonderment on their part that they are now proud owners of an indoor cycling business.

“I’ve been a competitive swimmer my whole life,” says Hazen, who is a partner with Dasher in the new indoor cycling center CycleBar Westgate West in San Jose. “I’ve suffered some injuries over the years and indoor cycling is low impact so it doesn’t hurt me. People often don’t want to go to the gym to work out because they see it as drudgery. But this is fun and it’s a great workout. What could be better than that?”

In fact, Hazen, who has become an avid indoor cyclist since purchasing the CycleBar franchise, says cycling has helped her get back into shape to allow her to swim more. That’s a win-win, no matter how you look at it.

Hazen said she and Dasher, who have both spent the bulk of their careers in the high-tech industry in the Silicon Valley, had been looking into franchise opportunities to augment their income and for long-term security.

Dasher said he took a “serious dive” into the world of franchises, even to the point of working with a franchise consultant.

The couple found that indoor cycling was a growing sport with a positive upside. CycleBar, an emerging concept in premium indoor cycling, seemed like the perfect fit for the couple.

And even though Dasher is an avid cyclist — outdoor, he emphasizes — he found that indoor cycling is a whole different sport.

“I didn’t think I’d like it, I had that purist mentality, I thought indoor cycling was something you only did during inclement weather,” says Dasher. “It’s a different sport and once you realize that, you realize it’s a great cross-training workout. Training at CycleBar isn’t just a rainy-day replacement, it’s an immersive, entertaining cross training experience with instructors and classmates that make the workouts extremely rewarding.”

When asked if taking on a franchise without any experience in that particular field might be a huge leap of faith, Dasher agreed.

“That’s the nature of starting a business of any type, you have to take a leap of faith,” he says. “It could be a Subway franchise, you never really know until you get there. You bring your own strengths and weaknesses to any business.”

Both Dasher and Hazen have spent their careers in high-tech. Hazen is still working in high-tech, while Dasher was the victim of downsizing, which spurred him on to look into franchising and more financial security.

Hazen’s career has included companies such as Oracle, Automated Power Exchange, Medical Accuracy Device Company and Labcyte, which she currently works for.

Born in Sacramento, Hazen graduated from Stanford in 1986 with a degree in public policy. She swam with the Cardinal swim team all four years, garnering All American honors each year.

She met Dasher while they were both doing physical therapy; she was there to rehab a swim injury. Later, they joined forces to participate in a team triathlon event, she swimming, he on bicycle.

Dasher was born and raised just outside Philadelphia and moved to California in 1990, where he also worked at Oracle and other high-tech companies before his layoff.

CycleBar, an emerging concept in premium indoor cycling, has quickly made a name for itself in the fitness community with its unique approach to indoor cycling. Instructors conduct classes in a theater-like setting, complete with music, visuals and lighting that combine to deliver a motivational, multisensory, communal experience as class participants dig deep to meet their workout goals.

CycleBar offers a variety of payment plans including pay per ride or monthly memberships and provides concierge amenities including free towels, shower facilities, lockers and shoes.

Classes take place in a state-of-the-art CycleTheatre, led by CycleStar instructors who motivate their class to reach performance goals. Each ride is added to the rider’s CycleStats, which measures and logs six key metrics to track the progress of their fitness journey. Each rider also receives the class playlist via CycleBeats.

“We brand ourselves as a premier indoor cycling center,” says Dasher. “I describe it as a cross between a boutique fitness center and a high-end spa.”

CycleBar WestGate West, which is scheduled to open on May 4, will be conveniently located in West San Jose just minutes from Campbell, Cupertino, Santa Clara, Saratoga and Sunnyvale — within easy reach of people who live and work in these communities.

Dasher says the success of the franchise will depend on getting the word out to those communities.

“It’s a matter of getting out in the community and making people aware we are here,” says Dasher. “We’ll take a conservative approach and let demand drive growth. Eventually we’d like to open in Mountain View and Santa Clara. That’s the plan.”
