MPA Watch in Need of Volunteers

Learn How to Support Today

Monterey, CA, May 15, 2018 — California’s scenic and spectacular 840-mile coastline and ocean are among the country’s most treasured resources and is central to the state’s identity, heritage and economy. California also leads the nation and the world in ocean protection, ensuring the preservation of important ecosystems along its coastline.

Volunteers are often the lifeblood of the many and varied organizations, both public and private, that help preserve and protect the coast and ocean. One of those organizations is MPA Watch, a citizen science monitoring program that trains volunteers to observe and collect unbiased data on human uses of coastal and marine resources both inside and outside of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

By involving local communities in this important work, MPA Watch programs inspire and empower stewardship of the coast and ocean, and educate community members about California’s ocean ecosystems.

MPA Watch programs across the state of California are continually training a network of volunteers to monitor resource use inside and outside these protected areas. Volunteers use standardized protocols to collect relevant, scientifically rigorous, and broadly accessible data.

Not only do local volunteers learn about their coastal environment and become “citizen scientists” and stewards of the area, but they generate large quantities of monitoring data that would not be possible under the current state budget.

Citizen-science, also known as community science, is research conducted by trained volunteers from the general public who are interested in science, monitoring, and conservation of the marine environment. But, you do not need any scientific background to collect data for these surveys.

Volunteers will be trained to collect valuable data on ocean users and their activities, such as surfing, kayaking, fishing, boating, running, etc. Specifically, the MPA Watch volunteers will observe and record both consumptive and non-consumptive offshore and onshore activities in and around MPAs, which will improve our understanding of how people are using these new MPAs.

Data are meant to inform the management, enforcement, and science of California’ MPAs and allow us to see how human uses are changing as a result of implementation of these MPAs.

From 2010 to 2015, more than 850 MPA Watch volunteers were actively engaged in surveying MPAs from Mendocino County to San Diego County, resulting in more than 10,000 surveys.

Organizations in your community are always looking for volunteers to do this important work. To get involved, contact organizations that are operating MPA Watch programs in your area. Current organizations and their contact persons include:

Carmel Academy of Performing Arts Elevates Its Dance Training With Continuing Affiliation With Highly Regarded Royal Academy of Dance Program

The Carmel Academy of Performing Arts, which has been providing unmatched dance, acting and vocal music training in the area for almost 65 years

CARMEL, CA, March 04, 2018 – The Carmel Academy of Performing Arts, which has been providing unmatched dance, acting and vocal music training in the area for almost 65 years, improved even more with its ongoing association with the highly regarded Royal Academy of Dance training program.

“Four years ago we became a Royal Academy of Dance-certified training facility, the only training facility of its type between Los Angeles and San Jose,” says Carol Richmond, owner of CAPA. “RAD sets standards in classical ballet and we now have three teachers who are trained in the RAD system. It’s solid, current technical training that is age-appropriate.”

Initially founded in 1920 to reinvigorate dance teaching in the United Kingdom, RAD has expanded its influence and activities worldwide with more than 1,000 students in its teacher training programs. The RAD examination syllabus is taught to more than a quarter million students in 79 countries, helping teachers to perfect their teaching skills and pass their knowledge on to their students. RAD has about 14,000 members worldwide and is considered one of the world’s most influential dance education and training organizations in the world.

According to its website, “The RAD promotes the knowledge, understanding and practice of dance internationally. We seek to accomplish this through promoting dance, educating and training students and teachers and providing examinations to set standards and reward achievement.”

To Richmond, affiliating with RAD strengthens and elevates the training programs already in place at CAPA. What she stresses is that affiliating with RAD does not make CAPA a training facility for professional dancers.

“There’s this misunderstanding that this is pre-professional training. It’s not about launching a pro career,” says Richmond. “This is solid, proper training that all classical ballet should be. It’s a method taught by syllabus for both boys and girls where you know the child is ready to commence to the next level because they know the work. Standardization is vital with technical training and also allows a high level of artistic ability.”

CAPA currently has three RAD-certified dance teachers: Sandra Burnham, Philip Pegler and Kelly Pegler (detailed bios below). Burnham has 50 years experience as a dancer and teacher and was an international ballet examiner for RAD in London. Philip Pegler first took classical ballet when he was 5 and was a teacher at Elmhurst School for Dance and director of the Calvert-Brodie School of Dance, among others. Kelly Pegler is a certified Pilates teacher, has a bachelor’s degree from RAD and was a teacher at The Royal Ballet School.

Richmond believes 2018 is a “tipping point year” for CAPA. She wants to continue to educate the public about the value of their affiliation with RAD, but also shed some light on CAPA’s upcoming summer programs, which also involves RAD-certified dance classes.

Registration begins Feb. 26 for the seven-week summer camps, June 11-Aug. 3, including sewing camp, aerial silks camp, vocal camp, contemporary jazz dance camp, competitive dance camp, classical ballet, and more.

For more information on RAD and CAPA’s summer programs, call (831) 624-3729.

CAPA Royal Academy of Dance Teachers:

Sandra Burnham

British born Sandra Burnham has 50 years’ experience as a professional dancer, teacher and examiner of classical ballet. She opened and ran her own highly successful ballet school in beautiful North Yorkshire for 20 years, during which time she became an international ballet examiner for London’s Royal Academy of Dance.

She has taught and examined in Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, Shanghai, Hong Kong, the Carribean, Canada and the United States. She teaches summer schools, intensives, and coaches dancers for Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP).

Her teaching is noted for its careful combination of technique with interpretation, and for her disciplined care for and compassion with her students.

Philip Pegler

Born in England in 1974, Philip Pegler began his study of Classical Ballet at age five. In 1986, he embarked on his professional training, at the Bush Davies School, followed by The Vaganova Academy, The Legat School, and The Harid Conservatory in Florida, where he graduated in 1992. Later that year, Philip was accepted into The Royal Ballet School where he completed his training as a dancer and teacher.

After graduating, Philip became Ballet Master and Soloist Dancer with Columbia City Ballet in South Carolina, appointed the following year as Artistic Director of the South Carolina Dance Theatre. In 1998, he became Director of the Calvert-Brodie School of Dance where he taught notable students such as Cameron Adams, Dusty Button, Brooklyn Mack, Sara Mearns, Joseph Phillips and Joy and Christian Tworzyanski.

In 2002, Philip was appointed Professor at the University of Florida where he created a new curriculum for the University’s Ballet program as well as serving as a pre-performance lecturer at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. From 2009-14 Philip taught at Elmhurst School for Dance before returning to the U.S. He is currently the Ballet Director of the Carmel Academy of Performing Arts and a faculty member of Los Angeles Ballet Academy.

Kelly Pegler

Kelly was born in Palos Heights, Illinois and as a young child moved south with her family to live on Florida’s Gulf Coast. She began dancing soon after, and at the age of 12 decided to focus on training in Classical Ballet. From 2004-2007, Kelly was a student at the American Academy of Ballet in New York where she studied under many respected teachers and former dancers including, Olga Dvorovenko, Jay Jolley, Sara Knight, Stephanie Saland and Violette Verdy.

During her time in England, Kelly gained her bachelor’s degree from the Royal Academy of Dance and taught at many schools throughout London. She was also chosen to partake in the making of BBC film “Margot” and relished in the experience of working alongside actress Ann-Marie Duff and theater legend Sir Derek Jacobi.

From an early stage in her dance training, Kelly used Pilates as a form of body conditioning. Her love of Pilates led her to train with Master Pilates Teacher Alan Herdman in London, where she became certified as a comprehensive Pilates teacher. While on the course, Kelly was fortunate to study with physiotherapist Shirley Hancock, gaining an invaluable insight on rehabilitation for clients of all ages.

After completing her Pilates certification, Kelly was invited to teach the girls Body Conditioning at The Royal Ballet School. Through this position at the school, Kelly was able to observe and work with dancers from The Royal Ballet. Whether it be for rehabilitation or maintaining a well-balanced, healthy body, Kelly is eager to continue developing her practice and sharing her love of the life changing way of Pilates.

ADVENTURE KINGS SOLAR PANEL RANGE – HOW MUCH POWER DO I NEED?

Sydney, NSW, Australia, 2018-Jan-15 — /REAL TIME PRESS RELEASE/ — When you need to recharge yourself and your 12V system, look no further than an Adventure Kings Solar charging system.

We have pioneered a range that starts from a simple 10W USB solar charger to a fully fledged 250W output array with MPPT Regulation for absolute maximum output to give you the options to power your setup no matter what you take camping with you.

All Adventure Kings Solar panels use Monocrystalline silicone cell construction which is the most efficient panel design available remaining lightweight and compact whilst still outputting effective power for use at home or in the bush.

We have fully standalone systems that include a solar regulator in both hard framed designs or the more flexible folding solar blankets which are excellent for space saving in the back of your vehicle or for emergency use.

We even have a fully customisable 110W Hard mounted system that includes fittings so you can easily and permanently mount it to your vehicle, camper trailer, campervan, caravan or boat with your choice of solar regulator.

We stock both the easy to operate low cost PWM style of regulator that has become the standard across the industry, or you can upgrade to one of our high efficiency, high output MPPT style regulators which gives you up to 30% more efficiency in cloudy or overcast conditions ensuring you get the most out of your solar setup no matter what the weather conditions.

Adventure Kings maintains its reputation for supplying functional camping setups whilst also still offering some of the most affordable solar setups available to the Australian market!

Whatever your 12V setup, Adventure Kings has a Solar charging system to efficiently top up your batteries and run accessories, with zero running costs and zero noise, whilst you kick back and relax and enjoy your favorite campsite in peace and quiet….When you are looking for a solar panel setup, you can’t look past an Adventure Kings Solar setup.

When you’re building a tourer or planning a campsite in your head, solar panels should always be a consideration – they are a source of free, limitless power after all – but how do you know what panel to choose!?

Luckily Adventure Kings has a wide range of panels, that won’t break the bank.

There are two main considerations to make when choosing a solar panel – how much power you use and how much space you have to pack your panel/s.

First, to calculate your requirements, consider how many 12 volt accessories you use at camp.

Generally all electrical products will have a wattage listed (check for a sticker near the power cord) you can use this wattage to calculate the real-time amps the product will use while it’s on. Some products may also list an Amp/Hour rating which simply gives an average on the total amount of amps used per hour the product is turned on. For example, the Adventure Kings 60L fridge/freezer is rated to use less than 1 amp/hour when the interior is set at 5°C and the outside temperature is 32°C.

So let’s work through an example:

You arrive at camp at 6pm on Friday, and it’s 32°C – your fridge is down to temperature at 5°C thanks to being plugged in while you drive and you’re ready for an icy cold beverage while you light the campfire, roll out your swag and set up the awning. Then you set up an Illuminator Strip Light and as the sun sets you turn it on and wind it down for ambient light.

As the temperature drops into the night your fridge will use less power, but every time you open it for a bevvy it has to work to cool back down again, so we’ll assume the fridge is using the rated 0.83Amp/Hours all night and into the morning. 6pm to 8am the fridge has used around 12 amp hours. The Illuminator strip light was on for 5 hours total and uses 0.4A at its low level for a total of 2A

So between 6pm and 8am you used 14 Amps total – whether you have a 98AH or 115AH deep cycle battery you’ve still got plenty of juice.

But throughout the next day your fridge will continue to use power. Between 8am Saturday and 8am Sunday it will use another 24 Amps. Add another 5 hours of strip light use for 2Amps and add in a phone charge using a cig socket USB adapter rated at 12W – that’s another Amp per hour your phone is on charge. In this case your phone is charged in 2 hours so that’s another 2Amps. Plus you use your Thumper to inflate some inner tubes to relax and float in the river – you use your Thumper for 15 minutes. To calculate the amps used per hour, you find the instantaneous power listed on the sticker (45Amps) and because you’ve used it for a quarter of an hour, calculate one quarter of 45. For this example we’ll call it 12Amp/Hours.

So Saturday to Sunday morning 8am you’ve used 40Amp/Hours – combine this with the Friday night total 14Amps and you’re looking at 54Amp/Hours – at this point your Deep cycle battery has used over 55% capacity if you’ve got the 98AH battery, and over 46% capacity if you’re using a 115AH battery.

You’re planning to leave camp at 4pm so the fridge still needs to be powered by your battery for a further eight hours. That’s another 8Amp/Hours, bringing the total weekend use up to 62Amp/Hours. 63% of your 98AH battery and 53% of your 115AH battery – you should definitely add a solar panel to keep those batteries charged!

Now you can look at the output of the different solar panels available.

4WD Supacentre offers a 110W fixed solar panel, a 120W Folding Solar blanket (with PWM regulator) a 160W Folding solar kit (with PWM regulator) and a 250W folding solar panel kit (with PWM regulator). The table below shows their maximum charging amperage (assuming the same PWM regulator for all panels) as well as the estimated total Amp/Hours after 6,8 and 10 hours of sun light.

So even six hours of sunlight on the Saturday and Sunday and your battery will have recharged at least 72A/H with a 110W Fixed Solar Panel (with added PWM regulator.) This would cover your power usage and keep your batteries charged. Of course, this is only a guide and your actual consumption may vary depending on many factors including, but not limited to, the outside temperature, fridge temperature, battery condition, wiring size and condition, solar panel angle and position etc etc.

The second consideration is the amount of space you have in your vehicle – for smaller vehicles, a 120W portable Solar blanket is perfect as it packs down to a compact size and still packs a punch.

For permanent mounting solar panels, the choice is obvious – a 110W fixed solar panel (or two!) These feature a thicker aluminium frame and don’t come with a regulator so you can connect your own, use a DC to DC charger and even connect multiple.

For bigger vehicle where space is less of a priority a 160 or 250 watt folding solar panel is ideal. You can set these at varying angles to catch the sun, and they mean you can park in the shade and have your panel in the sun doing the hard work! They also provide plenty of power for bigger camp setups or hotter conditions where your fridge is working more to keep your drinks cool.
