Profiles in Courage: Rebel Ink Magazine Salutes a Double Mastectomy Cancer Survivor and Tattooed Wounded Warrior in Special Cover Article

As an inspiration to us all, the upcoming issue of Rebel Ink magazine, which launches Memorial Day weekend, is portraying two beautiful people on its cover who have overcome tremendous personal challenges.

Paramus, NJ, May 20, 2014 – As an inspiration to us all, the upcoming issue of Rebel Ink magazine, which launches Memorial Day weekend, is portraying two beautiful people on its cover who have overcome tremendous personal challenges. Carrie Jewell Dugo, a breast cancer and double mastectomy survivor, and Alex Minsky, a wounded warrior who suffered serious injuries including the loss of his leg in Afghanistan, have bodies that are considered “non-traditional.” Profiled in depth in Rebel Ink, we revel in how both have regained their self-esteem and inspired others through their unique tattoo experiences.

Australian-born Carrie Jewell Dugo was diagnosed with breast cancer during her pregnancy and had a double mastectomy to save the life of her child. Chemo and multiple reconstructive surgeries left Carrie disfigured and scarred physically and emotionally. After dealing with stress, anger, depression and body image issues, she decided that she wanted her children to perceive her as a confident happy Mom. She used the Gerson Therapy for healing, attended spiritual retreats and nutritional weekends. Carrie then decided to help herself and inspire others by having a beautiful corset tattoo applied over her scars by Dawn-Marie of SkinFlower Cosmic Arts, a skilled tattoo artist in upstate New York where Carrie now lives. Inspired by the corset costumes she always admired in a favorite film, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Carrie explains, “For me, getting tattooed was empowering. After every session, I felt my confidence and strength grow. So I am happy people find me inspirational.”

Orange County, CA resident Alex Minsky was a Marine for nearly three years in 2010 when his vehicle ran over an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) while serving in Afghanistan and he suffered serious leg and brain injuries. He was in a coma for 47 days with total memory loss and his leg was amputated. Although he had tattoos prior to entering the Marines, he went to Rick Williams Balboa Tattoo in Newport Beach and Sterling Barck at Costa Mesa Tattoo to obtain more extensive tattoos on his body. While he was working out to regain strength, a photographer approached him, took some photos. Soon after, Alex became a model, totally exposing his athlete blade prosthesis with pride to help others with injuries. Alex explains, “When I struggle, I need something, and I find inspiration from other things. I’m glad people are finding inspiration from other things, and if it’s my picture, then that’s a good thing.”

Tattoos are an art form that date back to 6000 BC and have been gaining more mainstream acceptance in recent years as a visual form of personal expression. According to a Pew Research Center report from December, 2013, the total percent of Americans who have at least one tattoo are 14% or 45 million. There are 21,000 tattoo parlors in the U.S. and Americans spend over $1.65 billion on tattoos.

Founded six years ago, the award-winning Rebel Ink magazine (www.rebelinkmag.com) focuses on many cutting edge aspects of tattoos and the magazine now enjoys a 100,000 circulation. It is available at Barnes and Noble, Target, Walmart, 7-11, Rite Aid and many other retailers, and by subscription. This international magazine celebrates unique tattoos, tattoo artists, and celebrities through interviews and high quality photographs. Rebel Ink is part of the same company that also publishes Urban Ink and Skin & Ink for people of color.

Commenting on the issue that launches Memorial Day, Rebel Ink Editor-in-Chief, Paul Gambino, explains, “We chose Carrie Jewell Dugo and Alex Minsky as our cover models to show the world two tattooed individuals who exemplify courage and used tattoos for their own healing process. We hope it opens the eyes of others to the world of tattoos and how this form of personal expression is an art form like others to be admired…and inspire others.”

Tattoos have been highlighted in numerous recent films including The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Hangover series, and more. Tatoos are seen on numerous actors including Veritas Aequitas in The Boondock Saints, Dolarhyde’s entire backside in Red Dragon, Robert De Niro in Cape Fear, Mila Kunis in Black Swan, Guy Pearce in Memento, in the New Grand Auto Theft video game characters, among many others. Tattoed celebrities include Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Mike Tyson, Dwayne Johnson, David Beckham and Rhianna, among many others. Tattooed models are finally accepted on the runways around the world, allowing the tattoo art form to come out of the closet, so to speak.

Perhaps not to the extent as Carrie and Alex, other military veterans have been tattooed with visible memories of conflict, loss and suffering. Breast cancer survivors have also used tattoos to commemorate their survival and celebrate the fight against breast cancer. More professionals, such as lawyers, doctors, real estate brokers, bankers, now have tattoos. However, some employers still do not allow them to be visible in the workplace.

Online Art Gallery Now Accepts 3 Dimensional Art

The Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery (LST) is pleased to announce that they will now accept 3 dimensional art (3D Art) into their future online art competitions.

Jupiter, FL, USA (May 16, 2014) — The Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery (LST) is pleased to announce that they will now accept 3 dimensional art (3D Art) into their future online art competitions. In the past, LST decided not to accept this type of art, as many presentations of 3D art were below their standards in quality for publishing art on their website.

3D art which will now be acceptable for entering into their online art competitions will be sculpture, collage, pottery, relief type art, kinetics, installation art, assemblage, crafts, carving, glass, jewelry, paper and related media, as long as the art which is entered is in keeping and related to the gallery’s theme. The 3D Art that the LST Gallery will accept for entry into their online exhibitions must still be presented professionally and at an acceptable high quality.

The LST Gallery receives many inquiries every month about accepting 3D Art and we hope that this policy change regarding expanding acceptable media will help the 3D artists to increase their venues to a much larger and quality audience of viewers.

We have put together a small post on how to photograph 3D Art properly and we hope that any artists who choose to enter their art in the gallery’s online art competitions will read and review these helpful ideas. Here is a link to the post “Tips for Photographing 3 Dimensional Art”.

If you know of any 3D Artists or of any art organizations who may be interested in this announcement, we hope that you will make them aware of this news by forwarding this post to them.

A Secret City Beneath the Indian Ocean: Nonprofit Movement Challenges Traditional History in New Documentary Film, Dwarka: Atlantis of the East

Is the buried city of Dwarka the oldest civilization known to man? Did it house anachronistic technologies like flying machines and even nuclear weapons? The Ancient Explorers Movement answers these questions in the world premiere online screening of their debut documentary film, “Dwarka: Atlantis of the East”.

Encinitas, CA, May 01, 2014 (Straight Line PR) — The Ancient Explorers Movement have announced a free online screening of their debut documentary film, Dwarka: Atlantis of The East. The film aims to educate the public on the truth behind the ancient Indian city of Dwarka, and why this site may force historians to reconsider certain long-held assumptions about early civilizations and technology.

“It’s astonishing that nobody has told this story yet, because what we found on a recent expedition to modern-day Dwarka was unprecedented,” says Amish Shah, Founder of The Ancient Explorers. “We tracked down evasive government officials, learned of abruptly disbanded excavation teams, and even found strange ancient artifacts washed up on the shores of Dwarka that seem to poke large holes in our existing historical timelines and assumptions about ancient technology.”

In the ancient Sanskrit text known as the Mahabharata, Dwarka was a majestic kingdom built by the enigmatic figure Krishna. This kingdom was then devoured by the sea, after a brutal war said to have killed over 4 million soldiers in just two days. Multiple modern-day excavation missions have consistently unearthed artifacts from Dwarka’s sea bed, which appeared to corroborate these historical accounts, until all digs were halted in 2000.

A short trailer for the film, Dwarka: Atlantis of the East, can be found on YouTube, along with a link to sign up for the movie’s May 1st premiere: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pquok7SdrKU

The Ancient Explorers are a movement founded in 2013, with the purpose of exploring historical hotspots across the globe which may reveal untold secrets regarding the ancient origins of mankind. In just 6 months, their online community has grown to over 130,000 members worldwide.

The public is invited to the world premiere online screening of Dwarka: Atlantis of the East on May 1st, 2014. To tune in for free, RSVP now at http://AncientExplorers.com/screening/

Carmel Brantley Chosen for Gallery’s Artist Showcase

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery is extremely pleased to announce that South Florida fine art photographer Carmel Brantley is the gallery’s newest featured artist and will be featured in their Artist Showcase.

Jupiter, FL, USA (April 15, 2014) — Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery is extremely pleased to announce that South Florida fine art photographer Carmel Brantley is the gallery’s newest featured artist and will be featured in their Artist Showcase.

Carmel is inspired by light, texture, and form, as her photographs are modern expressions of depth and detail. Sought after by private collectors, her photographs have been featured in several juried exhibitions, as well as Art in Public Places, Palm Beach County. Carmel is the recipient of several photography awards, including Best in Show, Palm Beach Photographic Center.

Carmel grew up in Des Moines Iowa and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Advertising and Graphic Art from Drake University. Carmel resides in South Florida with her husband, photographer Robert Brantley. Together, they operate Brantley Photography, a commercial photography studio specializing in architecture and interior design.

Carmel states this about her art, “I am drawn to subject matter that have an intrinsic and often subtle, simple beauty to their being. I find intrigue in allowing the camera to record the complexities of the subject, never certain of what details and secrets might emerge. Classic and rich, sepia toned images reminiscent of an earlier time, have always been a passion of mine. So too are bold, stimulating, contemporary black and white images. I strive for intimacy, seeking to explore, embrace and define that which the camera captures. I am reminded each time I peer through the viewfinder of the magical power the camera possess, and its limitless capacity to engage, surprise and reveal a new perspective on the familiar.”?

Flower Child Productions is the fine art division of Brantley Photography, featuring the work of Carmel Brantley. In addition to art collectors, Carmel works closely with interior designers and architects in choosing artwork for their clients. Flower Child Productions also produces books and hand printed cards. Her website is http://www.flowerchildproductions.com.
