Santerno Introduces New PV Power Plant Controller that Provides Single Point of Control at Solar Power International

New Power Plant Controller Reduces Cost of PV System Management By Eliminating Need for Multiple Controllers and Includes Self-tuning POI to Accommodate International Grid Codes.

Chicago, USA (October 21, 2013) — At Solar Power International this week, Santerno, the Carraro Group company that specializes in alternative energy electronics and industrial automation, will display its new Santerno PV Power Plant Controller (PPC). The Santerno PPC is a utility-scale solar power system controller that consolidates management of photovoltaic (PV) power plants, providing a single point of integrated control and monitoring.

Santerno developed its own power plant controller in order to reduce costs and expand management capability and control for its utility PV customers. The Santerno PPC is a complete control solution that provides a single access point for the plant supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) control systems, including all PV inverters, the data logger, and auxiliary services. This eliminates the need to integrate a separate management system for the solar power inverters.

The Santerno PPC also provides a single, self-tuned, modified proportional internal (PI) controller which operates at the plant level to make sure all the inverters match power grid code requirements. Unlike other systems, the Santerno PPC does not require the trial-and-error approach typically used to match standard PI regulators. The power parameters are set in advance using the plant data and the electrical characteristic data for the Point of Interconnection (POI) so it automatically matches international grid code requirements.

“As an engineering-oriented company, we are always working to develop new technology that solves our customers’ needs and delivers the highest return on investment. By developing our own Power Plant Controller we are able to consolidate management of Santerno solar inverters with other plant monitoring and SCADA systems into a single interface,” said Franco Valentini, Marketing Director of Santerno. “When you add in support from our online Web management portal, you have a complete controller solution, including remote monitoring.”

The Santerno PPC can be configured for most grid operator protocols, and is compliant with European and worldwide standards, field programmable according to local regulations. It also can be optionally configured to control static VAR compensator (SVC) or static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) at the Point of Interconnections (POI). This enables the PV plant for Extended Power Capability or Flexible AC Transmission System functions. It also has Digital Control Functions, including closed loop active power curtailment, closed look reactive power control, closed-loop POI voltage control, and P(f) curtailment control.

Santerno is displaying its new PPC at Solar Power International, booth 746. For more information, visit http://www.santerno.com.

Greenwood Biosar To Install Five Santerno PV Inverters at New Romanian Solar Power Installation

New Contract for Delivery of Five Santerno TG760 1000V Solar Power Inverters Expands Santerno Penetration Into Eastern Europe with New 5 MW Photovoltaic System.

San Francisco (September 18, 2013) — Santerno, the Carraro Group company that specializes in alternative energy electronics and industrial automation, has signed an agreement with Greenwood Biosar, the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) division of Greenwood Energy, to deliver five Santerno TG760 1000V solar inverters for installation at a new solar project in Calarasi, Romania. The PC inverters will deliver nearly 5 MW of solar power. This contract also increases Santerno’s market footprint in Eastern Europe; in the first six months of 2013 Santerno has installed photovoltaic (PV) inverters that deliver 35 MW of power in Romania and 40 MW of power in Greece.

According to company estimates, these five Santerno TG760 inverters will deliver a total output of 4998.245 kWp, or an estimated 6,739 MW hours per year. Santerno’s TG solar inverters are manufactured in Italy for use in media and large utility-scale PV systems. These best-in-class outdoor inverters are designed to deliver maximum yield for the lowest cost, and have all the grid code integrated features needed for compliance with advanced European and global power standards, including LVRT (low-voltage ride through), Reactive Power Control, Frequency and Voltage controls. The Santerno inverters are designed for optimal performance in harsh environments with a long meantime between failure.

“Greenwood Biosar has already seen the value of our solar inverter technology in their Vermont utility-scale PV installation and in a number of installations in Greece,” said Marco Tecchio, Chief Executive Officer of Santerno. “Our TG760 is ideally suited for the new Romanian installation, since the climate is moderate and there is nominal rainfall. The TG760 has performed flawlessly in harsher environments and we expect these inverters will be in service for years to come.”

All of Santerno’s solar power inverters feature a modular design for easy inspection and repair. Remote monitoring via the Web also is supported using the Santerno online monitoring system, which can be used to manage single-device or multi-inverter installations. Santerno uses an innovative satellite linking system so even if a local Internet connection is unavailable, a satellite link connects the PV system to the Web-based Santerno Portal monitoring system no matter what the location or terrain. Santerno’s inverters also have embedded Utility Interactive Features that are software controlled and completely configurable based on the appropriate grid code.

Santerno continues to expand into PV global markets with new contracts signed recently in South Africa and the United States as well as Eastern Europe.

Santerno Solar Inverters Deliver Proven Performance at Solar Systems’ Mildura Solar Power Station in Australia

Contract with Solar Systems Demonstrates that Santerno Inverters Designed for Optimal CPV Performance in Harsh Conditions Such as Arid Australian Outback.

IMOLA, Italy (July 25, 2013) — Santerno, the Carraro Group company that specializes in alternative energy electronics and industrial automation, today announced the completion of installation of its concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) power inverters in the first phase of the Mildura Solar Power Station Project in Australia. The power station, located in Victoria, was constructed by Solar Systems, wholly owned subsidiary of Silex Systems Limited, and is to be one of the largest solar power stations in Australia.

By standardizing on the Santerno solar inverters, Solar Systems ensures that the Mildura Solar Power Station remains in compliance with Australian construction codes for solar systems. Santerno’s solar components are being provided by NHP Electrical Engineering Products, which has been supplying sales and service of Santerno solar technology in Australia and New Zealand since 2003.

Unlike most solar power installations, Solar Systems uses a unique design that concentrates solar power using a parabolic mirror that focuses the sun’s energy onto a focal point where a small area of high-efficiency PV cells then converts the solar rays into electrical power. These curved reflecting mirrors are mounted on tracking systems that follow the sun to deliver concentrated CPV energy throughout the day. Stage one of the Mildura Power Station project is a 1.5 MW demonstration solar array; enough clean energy to power 500 homes.

“Solar Systems’ innovative tracking dish design is one of the most efficient PV designs we have seen, and it’s installed in some of the harshest climates on the planet,” said Marco Tecchio, Chief Executive Officer of Santerno. “The successful completion of this project demonstrates the resilience of our solar inverters and their suitability for use in even the most challenging environments. We anticipate that, with the aid of partners such as Solar Systems, we will be able to continue to expand into global markets, including Australia.”

Santerno is aggressively expanding into new global markets with new contracts signed recently in South Africa and the United States.
