New Book Release – Fractured Idols, by Kevin Austin

Fractured Idols, by Kevin Austin, is a tale of Interior Designer Sebastian Cartwright as he emerges from the financial chaos of the Great Depression into a world still dominated by corporations.

London, UK (October 8, 2015) — Kevin Austin’s Fractured Idols is a snapshot of the lives of wealthy Metropolitans who inhabit London’s super-rich Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. This is the world of Sebastian Cartwright, top International Interior Designer and friend of the great and the good. His larger-than-life chums include Magda, a glamorous Hungarian émigré, her lover Phillip, Viscount Brampton, scion of an Aristocratic English family and trusted confidant, Karim, a Moroccan Architect who commutes between Marrakesh and Amsterdam with his Dutch partner Christiaan.

But Sebastian Cartwright is angry. His career as an Interior Designer took a hit during the Credit Crunch in 2008 and has never recovered. He feels adrift in a world that has changed beyond his recognition; his whole being fractured. A classicist in style, his old-fashioned values have also suffered at the hands of what he feels to be a Media-led destruction of all he holds dear. His world-view, influenced by his innate Christianity, is affronted by the idolatry he sees around him.

Magda introduces him to Madeleine Armitage, an avaricious, antipodean corporate wife and Sebastian’s life is turned upside down. His deep antipathy towards her is put aside during a weekend house party in rural Southern Spain where a significant person from his past appears and he is forced to confront a panoply of emotions buried deep in his soul.

A timely and humorous look at the issues of Big: Government, Banks, Media, and Religion, Fractured Idols reinvents a well-worn idiom: “Hell hath no fury like a Homosexual scorned”.

Author Bio: Kevin Austin attended school and University in Perth, Western Australia before moving to London in 1987. Experience working in the City of London, Television Production, and as co-owner of a Boutique Hotel in Spain gave him the background for this, his first novel. He co-owns British Society Salon EQUUSHAIR with his partner Geoffrey and they live in Kensington with their Labrador Charlie.

Fractured Idols is the first of two parts. Goliath and the Kitten Factory will be published by First Edition in March 2016.

Genre – Politics, Government, Religion, Drama, Fiction

The ebook version of Fractured Idols ISBN 9781622879540, published by First Edition Design Publishing, is available on-line wherever ebooks are sold. The 154 page print book version, ISBN 9781622879533 is published by First Edition Design Publishing and distributed worldwide to online booksellers.

LondonTown.com: New London museum located in notorious hospital

Bethlam Royal Hospital hosts new permanent Museum Of The Mind.

LONDON, March 23, 2015 — /REAL TIME PRESS RELEASE/ — One of the most notorious psychiatric hospitals in history – Bethlam Royal Hospital, which gave its name to the word ‘bedlam’ – will be opening a pioneering gallery and museum on its premises this month. The new displays will be filled with the personal stories – both historic and contemporary – of those who have experienced mental health difficulties and will explore the long, controversial and often misunderstood history of Bethlem, founded 1247 in central London. Bethlem Gallery and Museum of the Mind opens on 19 February 2015. The Bethlam Royal Hospital has occupied various sites, including the building now used by the Imperial War Museum in Waterloo, and is now located in Beckenham, a short journey by train from the centre of London. To see other attractions in the area and learn how to get to Beckenham, as well as finding up-to-date information on hotels in London, see LondonTown.com.

The Bethlem Gallery and Museum of the Mind will occupy the hospital’s original 1930s administration building and celebrate the lives and achievements of those living with mental ill-health. Themed gallery spaces will explore the reasons why people arrive at Bethlem, aiming to inspire discussion, debate and reflection on mental health issues which are as relevant today as they were in the past. The museum will house significant art and historical artefacts, almost all of which will be on display for the first time, as well as works by current artists and hospital service users.

Among the highlights are paintings and drawings by Richard Dadd, Louis Wain and Jonathan Martin, each of whom was a former Bethlem or Maudsley Hospital patient; and the oldest objects in the collection, the imposing statues, ‘Raving and Melancholy Madness’ by Caius Gabriel Cibber (c1676) which originally stood above the gates of the 17th century ‘Bedlam’ at Moorfields. They will now take their place either side of the art deco staircase directly ahead of visitors entering the new museum. Notable paintings from the internationally renowned art collection include ‘The Maze’ by William Kurelek (1953), ‘Sketch of an idea for Crazy Jane’ by Richard Dadd (1855), ‘Numb’ by Lisa Biles (2009) and ‘Phrenology’ by Louis Wain (1911). Each of these will be on permanent display.

The exhibition will include striking images by Victorian photographer Henry Hering of Bethlem patients taken before and after treatment in order to detect their mental health conditions through facial expressions and features. The collection will also feature a key to the gates of the 18th century hospital, 19th century manacles, chains, straitjackets and other physical restraint devices, comments and letters from visitors from the 18th century up until today and 19th century admission and discharge registers.

LondonTown.com: London Zoo’s lemurs get brilliant new home

In With The Lemurs, a new home for the primates, opens next month at London Zoo.

LONDON, March 23, 2015 — /REAL TIME PRESS RELEASE/ — London Zoo is getting a new attraction next month in the shape of a swanky new walk-through home for the zoo’s playful troop of 16 lemurs. In With The Lemurs is a fine new base for the lemurs at the zoo, nestled as it is in the heart of leafy Regent’s Park, kitted out with the best accessories and with a desirable NW1 postcode. The new lemur attraction opens on Saturday 28th March at London Zoo. For more information on the zoo and other attractions in the area, as well as the best deals for a hotel in London, see LondonTown.com.

The lemur pen will be home to 15 ring-tail lemurs and one black and white ruffed lemur. Designed by the zoo’s expert keepers and horticulturalists,  In With The Lemurs will take visitors on a journey through the Madagascan shrub forest where the evolutionarily unique primates will be leaping, climbing and lounging all around them. Renowned sun-worshippers, the lemurs love nothing more than an afternoon spent sunbathing. With this in mind the zoo’s dedicated architects have carefully mapped the path of the sunlight on the new exhibit to ensure their basking platforms are purposefully located to maximise lounging time.

With an uncertain future in the wild, lemurs face a daily struggle to survive due to extensive habitat loss, and over-hunting. In With The Lemurs will give the zoo’s visitors a glimpse of these threats in the exhibit’s replica timber mill, highlighting the devastating effect the industry has on the lemurs’ wild habitat. Ring-tail lemurs are classified as endangered on the IUCN red-list, as are black and white ruffed lemurs, which are also listed on international conservation charity ZSL’s EDGE of Existence programme, due to the threat to their survival and evolutionary distinctiveness. The new attraction will help ensure that London Zoo remains one of Europe’s leading zoos in the way it combines fascinating attractions with sympathetic environments, following recent transformations of the enclosures for lions, tigers and gorillas. For more information on London Zoo, including location, travel information, admission prices and opening times, see LondonTown.com, the best London website for tourists and visitors to the capital.

LondonTown.com: Digital talk and avant-garde art at the ICA this summer

Two new events announced at the world’s leading multi-discipline avant-garde arts space.

LONDON, March 23, 2015 — /REAL TIME PRESS RELEASE/ — The Institute of Contemporary Arts, better known to Londoners as the ICA and renowned worldwide as one of the great avant-garde galleries, has announced two events that will take place at their Central London premises later this year. Fear of Missing Out: Summit Defining Influences of the Digital Age in 2015 (29th – 31st May 2015) is the title of a special symposium that will explore post-digital anxieties, while Isa Genzken: Basic Research Paintings is the title of an exhibition that will run from 30th June to 6th September in the ICA Upper Galleries. For more about other London events already announced at the ICA in 2015, see LondonTown.com, the website that also allows tourists and visitors to find the latest booking information for cheap London hotels.

Fear of Missing Out will be chaired by Berlin artist and theorist Hito Steyerl, bringing together leading international theorists, academics, social thinkers and artists to discuss post-digital anxieties and the social condition. It will examine the progression and trajectory of technological, economic, ecological and cultural advances by introducing speakers from diverse disciplines to present on topics from Artificial Intelligence to Cyberfeminism. Speakers confirmed include Karen Archey, Erika Balsom, Eleanor Saitta and McKenzie Wark and the summit will also include a screening of work by Harun Farocki. Additional speakers will be announced shortly.
Isa Genzken: Basic Research Paintings will feature the work of one of the most important and influential artists of the last forty years. Since the 1970s, Genzken has developed experimented with a variety of different materials and art forms, to include assemblage and photography, film and video. Her Basic Research paintings feature a frottage technique, similar to that deployed by surrealist artists in search of automatic forms of art production. Having applied a layer of paint to her canvas, she then placed the canvas face-down on her studio floor before rubbing the back with a squeegee. Having peeled the canvas away from the floor, the resulting print shows all the dirt and imperfections of her workspace in near photographic detail. The Basic Research paintings are compelling in that they invite scrutiny. For more information on these London events, plus other events and exhibitions taking place at the ICA, see LondonTown.com.

LondonTown.com: London gallery prepares to explore sex, penguins and much more

Wellcome Collection unveils an idiosyncratic autumn events programme for 2014

LONDON, September 17, 2014, The Wellcome Collection, one of London’s most stimulating and unusual venues is preparing to reopen after a lengthy closure for redevelopment and has revealed details of its event-packed autumn programme featuring a busy calendar of exhibitions and one-offs. The Wellcome Collection is located on the Euston Road close to Euston, King’s Cross and St Pancras International stations and features items covering art, science and history from an idiosyncratic personal collection accrued by a pharmacology billionaire on his travels almost 100 years ago. The venue is being extensively refurbished but several areas are open, including some gallery space, a café and bookshop. For more about the Wellcome Collection, see LondonTown.com, where you will also find the best information about London events and exhibitions, as well as London hotels, shops and restaurants.

The Wellcome’s programme includes An Idiosyncratic A to Z of the Human Condition, a free exhibition that runs until 12th October featuring a curious combination of objects, medical artefacts, paintings, photographs, sculptures, and contemporary artworks. Running until July 2015 is the free video installation, Eye Contact, which forms two giant pairs of eyes that stare out from the windows of the Wellcome Trust’s headquarters, winking and blinking at passing tourists and traffic. The eyes will be ‘awake’ and active through the day and will close at sunset to ‘sleep’ through the night – unless they are woken by a passing pedestrian.

The Wellcome will also be running the Age Of Exploration event series, which looks at the history of exploration and the nature of human curiosity. Events include a talk called Into The Unknown on Thursday 11th September (7-8.30pm), that looks at the human desire to question the unknown and the impact this has on our minds and bodies, and The Worst Journey on Thursday 9th October (7-8.30pm), which looks at the formation of Henry Wellcome’s vast hoard of medical curios and features a specially commissioned musical performance that looks at how how Apsley Cherry-Garrard, the youngest member of Captain Scott’s fateful expedition, risked life and limb to collect emperor penguin eggs in the Antarctic winter.

Coming later this year is a new exhibition, The Institute Of Sexology – from 20th November 2014 to 13th September 2015 – which will be a candid exploration of sexuality, featuring more than 200 objects spanning art, archival material, erotica, film and photography. It will be the first ever UK exhibition to look at the work of the pioneers of the study of sex.

London Hotels Offer Discounts for Notting Hill Carnival

The Notting Hill Carnival has been injecting noise and colour into London’s West End since 1966, when it was established by the Caribbean community. It is now Europe ‘s biggest street party, featuring floats, costumed dancers, calypso and soca musicians, and in excess of a million revellers of all ages. To coincide with the August Bank Holiday event, booking website LondonTown.com has announced discounted rates on a number of London hotels in the area.

The Carnival Bands start at around 9am on Sunday 25th August and at the same time on Monday 26th. The Sunday is officially designated Children’s Day, and Monday is for Adults. Dozens of Djs will entertain the crowds across Static Sound Systems 40 rigs. The usual mix of latin jazz, reggae, garage, hip hop and samba will dominate the decks. Highlights include Gaz’s Rockin’ Blues stage, which emits sounds heavy on the jazz-reggae.

Visitors are advised to use public transport as most of the local roads are closed to vehicles. Some underground stations may be temporarily closed if they become overcrowded, so revellers should check their planned route before departing.

Probably the egalitarian highlight of the London summer, the Notting Hill Carnival is free of charge for everyone, but partiers coming from outside the capital might be able to make use of LondonTown.com, which has recently announced discounts on a number of London hotels close to the action.

Among the London hotels participating in the offer, the Abbey Court Notting Hill has cut 27% off the standard room rate for double and twin rooms. The discount brings the cost of a night’s stay down to £128. The Abbey Court is located on Pembridge Gardens, less than ten minutes’ walk from the heart of the Carnival.

On the same street, 10 Pembridge Gardens by Mondo is a collection of studio apartments available for nightly rental. During the Carnival, they are offering studio rooms at a 20% discount, bringing the cost of a night’s stay down to just £110.

Both deals are available exclusively when booking via LondonTown.com. Contact the website for more discounted London hotels, and for more information on this year’s Notting Hill Carnival.

New York City, NY, USA (March 18, 2013) — Mr. Edgar Perez, author of The Speed Traders and the forthcoming Knightmare on Wall Street, will debunk a number of myths and misconceptions about the widely-discussed financial transaction tax in his keynote Golden Networking’s High-Frequency Trading Leaders Forum 2013 London, “Strategic and Tactical Insights for Investors, Speed Traders, Brokers and Exchanges”, March 21, forum that will provide attendees in London with the most up-to-date review of where this ever-changing industry stands through an inspiring keynote speeches and thought-provoking panels with leaders in the field.

High-Frequency Trading Leaders Forum 2013, “Strategic and Tactical Insights for Investors, Speed Traders, Brokers and Exchanges” (http://www.HFT-Leaders-Forum.com) will bring insights for investors and speed traders who need to protect and refine their competitive advantage in a world dominated by algorithmic and high-frequency trading. Recognized practitioners, regulators, experts, and strategists will return to High-Frequency Trading Leaders Forum 2013 to provide attendees with the information they are looking for in an open and unbiased environment, highly conducive to the most efficient and effective networking.

Topics that will be discussed at High-Frequency Trading Leaders Forum 2013 (http://www.HFT-Leaders-Forum.com) include the movement toward emerging markets, every time more attuned to the use of bots, the regulatory environment, how new technologies are changing the game, including a look at the upcoming regulatory changes that no doubt will be precipitated by Knight Capital’s trading glitch:

– Low Latency: How to achieve Ultra-Low Latency for High-Frequency Trading? As high-frequency trading moves towards multi-asset classes running multi-legged strategies demanding even faster execution, ultra-low latency performance becomes the focus. How will architectures evolve to meet the latency challenge? How helpful overclocking CPUs and leveraging FPGA coprocessors can result? How will wireless, cloud and big data technologies play in the speed race? How technology can enable modern applications to minimize latency while managing for high throughput?

– Regulatory Impact: With High-frequency Trading in the Spotlight, how new Regulations will Change the Industry? With high-frequency trading the subject of great controversy and debate, many regulations will be bound to change. How will regulations impact the way traders are capturing alpha? Would there be restrictions that can possibly harm algorithmic trading? How the economic and political landscape might impact the pace and severity of these changes?

– Robotic Markets: As High-frequency Trading Embraces Robotic Markets Worldwide, how Participants will be Able to Find new Opportunities to Sustain Alpha Creation? Algorithms are becoming more prevalent, faster, smarter, more self-adaptive and geographically distributed and embracing cross asset classes trading and geographies. How will robotic market impact trading, and high-frequency trading in particular? What will be the benefits quants can expect from this evolution? Will there be any disadvantages? New alpha versus alpha retention?

– Emerging Markets: How will Emerging Markets from Brazil to China Affect the Scope of High-frequency Trading? With emerging markets on the rise, high frequency trading and algorithmic trading are shifting to geographies in Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America. Which markets hold the most promise? Which asset classes can be traded in high-frequency in those markets? Are there restrictions to frequency and speed in place in any of those promising lands? What is the outlook for high-frequency trading among regulators in those markets?

– The Future of HFT: How High-frequency Trading will Evolve in Ever-changing Technology and Regulatory Environments? There has been a dramatic shift in how instruments are traded in the market. With high frequency trading able to detect price discrepancies in microseconds, aided by technology, regulators have grown increasingly concerned about its impact in market structure and fairness. What is the outlook for the markets when all participants engage in the arms race of super smart algorithms? Where will institutional and retail investors find opportunities? Conversely, could we imagine a world without high-frequency trading?
