Playing in the dirt isn’t just for kids: Seniors reap the health benefits of gardening

Holiday Retirement residents across the country use their green thumbs to stay healthy.

Lake Oswego, OR, May 17, 2015 – Seniors around the country are adding gardening to their list of daily activities thanks to the stress relief and health benefits it provides. And for Holiday Retirement residents, reaping the rewards of gardening is that much easier thanks to the leading senior living provider’s efforts to offer gardening opportunities at its communities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), seniors who participate in 2.5 hours a week of moderate-intensity activities such as gardening can reduce their risk for a number of health issues, including obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Gardening can also help with stress relief, improve depression symptoms, and reduce social isolation.

“Our residents’ health is of utmost importance, which is why we are dedicated to helping seniors get moving,” said Jamison Gosselin, vice president of marketing, communications, and resident enrichment at Holiday Retirement. “As the weather turns warmer, gardening provides an easy, accessible way for seniors of all skill levels to enjoy a rewarding, relaxing physical activity.”

As seniors increasingly downsize and move to senior living communities, they can adjust their gardening styles to reap the benefits in a smaller environment. Holiday Retirement has launched a series of resources focused on helping seniors enjoy the rewards – both mental and physical – that gardening has to offer:

* An infographic that offers suggestions to help seniors garden in comfort

* A checklist that provides everything seniors need to know about starting a container garden

From roses to vegetables to herbs, here are five examples of blossoming gardens at Holiday Retirement communities across the country:

1. South Wind Heights residents in Jonesboro, Arkansas, all enjoy chipping in to maintain the senior living community’s curb appeal. Residents take time to plant, water, and weed flowerpots and flowerbeds on a regular basis, with one 97-year-old resident dedicating much of her time each day to gardening.

2. Residents at Mistywood in Roseville, California, are living up to the city’s name. A memorial rose garden was built eight years ago for residents to honor loved ones who have passed away. The community grows myriad roses, as well as perennials, annuals, and even herbs and vegetables in a raised flowerbed built by a local Boy Scout troop. Herbs and vegetables are used in the kitchen while roses are used in floral arrangements around the senior living community.

3. Residents at Ashley Park in Charleston, South Carolina, have embraced container gardening and now anxiously await tomatoes, radishes, bell peppers, squash, onions, and various herbs. Residents use the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor during the Adventure Travel Program, where the senior living community makes tasty meals from different regions around the world.

4. At Whispering Oaks in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, residents discovered a newfound hobby when one Boy Scout troop built raised gardening beds for the senior living community to earn his Eagle Scout ranking. Thanks to his act of kindness, tomatoes, radishes, onions, peppers, and flowers grow regularly and are shared throughout Whispering Oaks.

5. University Pines, an independent senior living community in Pensacola, Florida, welcomed spring with the planting of numerous flowering plants, ferns, and cascading greenery. The backyard of the senior living community has blossomed this year thanks to resident green thumbs, not to mention the flowerpots on the front patio getting a face-lift for summer with new flowers. The community also celebrated Earth Day in April by planting seedlings, baby tree cuttings, and other green plants to bring an earthy feel to the community and to residents.

‘Berserk 2014’ – the 3-day Residential Art Conference for children came to a close with Grand Finale on 27th August, 2014 at the Amphitheatre in UB City.

Bangalore, India, August 29, 2014 — ‘Berserk 2014’ – the 3-day Residential Art Conference for children came to a close with Grand Finale on 27th August, 2014 at the Amphitheatre in UB City. The show witnessed magnificent performances from the mentors and students alike. All 4 verticals, namely Evam (Theatre), Lourd Vijay Dance Studio (LVDS) [Dance], Taaqademy (Music) & 3-Peel (Visual Art) reinforced the fact that they are indeed stalwarts in their respective fields, by giving breathtaking performances. Acts for the evening included:

* A Rendition of ‘Macbeth’ by Evam
* Hip-hop, Salsa & Kathak Performances by LVDS
* A Dance Performance by well-known Dancer, Sneha Kapoor of ‘Jhalak Dikhlaja’ fame
* Live Painting by 3-Peel
* A Musical Performance by Taaqademy

Excited students & parents, from this year’s edition as well as last year’s inaugural edition of Berserk, flocked to UB City to take part in the evening’s celebrations. Berserk is still a relatively new concept and it was heartening to see such whole-hearted support and encouragement for it from everyone present.

The Residential Art Conference for Berserk 2014 took place at ECC, Whitefield from 24th-27th August, 2014. To enable participation of a larger number of talented children, this year’s event was designed to include 110 children overall across the 4 verticals. This edition saw 2,000 students from 50 leading schools in Bangalore audition to take part in the conference. The tremendous success of the inaugural edition of Berserk was reinforced by the fact that parents travelled with their children all the way from Delhi, Chennai & Chikmagalur to participate in the Open Auditions this time around.

About ‘Berserk’:
Sublime Galleria introduced a unique proprietary event, Berserk in 2013. Berserk is an annual 3-day Residential Art Conference for children. Categorised under four key art verticals – Theatre, Dance, Music & Visual Art, Sublime brings the best in the art industry to mentor & guide these children. The programme involves identifying/shortlisting students from the chosen city schools who will partake in a 3-day Residential Conference comprising intensive workshops supported by sessions meticulously planned for each vertical, featuring guest lecturers & demonstrations by award-winning professionals apart from other endorsements & benefits.

It is widely acknowledged that much needs to be done when it comes to promoting fine art in India. This common belief has resulted in the creation of ‘Berserk’, conceptualised & created by Sublime Galleria to benefit talented children in the city.

Now, proud L.A. residents and thanks to Jackie, our only team is the Dodgers! Don’t understand why? Read our book to find out!”

Announcing The First Ever Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) Kids Early Reader Book Series

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education was a priority President Obama shared in his inaugural address. For the first time, a STEM-specific kids illustrated book series is being released by best-selling authors Ponn, JuJu, GiGi and JoJo Sabra.

Los Angeles, CA, March 29, 2013 – Best-selling authors and bloggers Ponn, JuJu (12), GiGi (11) and JoJo (9) Sabra announce the new release of: ‘What Is STEM?’ book one of the Emmy and Ott – The STEMBots kids book series. To be released on March 30, 2013, the book aims to “Make Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Fun and Easy for kids aged 4 to 12 years.”

In the attempt to make STEM subjects more practical, approachable, easy-to-understand and fun, best-selling authors and self-proclaimed STEMologists, Ponn, JuJu (12), GiGi (11) and JoJo (9) Sabra, created early-reader level books that will help build kids’ language and STEM-literacy skills at the same time.

Introducing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) To Early Readers
‘What Is STEM?’ is a 30-page colorful kids illustrated book, written in fun and easy rhymes, taught by robot characters Emmy and Ott – the world’s first STEM robots, also known as STEMBots. The book uses rhymes to help children memorize concepts for a fun and playful way to learn and includes a 4-page Glossary of Terms.

‘What is STEM?’ is available through Amazon.com. During the official launch from March 30- April 3, 2013, the book will be available FREE in digital format for Kindle readers. After April 3, the book will be $2.99.

Download ‘What is STEM’ at http://emmyandott.com/book1

“Parents can see the practicality of how, where, and when to infuse STEM into their kid’s daily lives, which can have a profound ability to spark the interest of their kids in these subjects. It’s unfortunate that these subjects are typically known as ‘difficult, boy-only, analytical, unapproachable’ classes. Our goal is to share our colorful and adorable STEMBot characters to excite parents, and demonstrate to kids that Science, Engineering, Technology and Math CAN be fun and easy”, says Ponn Sabra.

Kids need a way to make Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math interesting to them, for their future careers. Right now, one-third of fourth graders have lost an interest in Science, and about 50 percent of eighth graders are not interested in Science or find it unimportant to their education and future.

Despite spending the second most on education, the United States doesn’t rank well compared to the rest of the world. American students rank 28th in Math literary, 24th in Science literacy, and 20th for degrees in Natural Science and Engineering. It is predicted that by 2020, 58 percent of the workforce will be STEM-related jobs. The U.S. is not creating enough STEM-graduates to meet this demand. To stay competitive, our country needs need to build more interest in these subjects and is why President Obama prioritized STEM education in his 2013 inaugural address. In short, we need more STEMologists.

A STEMologist, according to the Sabra’s, is “an expert or someone studying how to make STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fun and practical for all”. The Sabra’s emphasize its value for girls, women and minorities, the under-represented groups in STEM fields.

Free Bonus Gifts For Kids
To further interest kids in these subjects, the Sabra’s offer free bonus gifts with the purchase of the “What is STEM?” book, such as:

An audio recording of the “What is STEM?” book,
Coloring pages of Emmy and Ott throughout the book, and
The opportunity for other kids to participate in weekly contests and challenges to build future STEMologists.

The Sabra Sisters are homeschooled by their mom, Ponn Sabra, a biologist and public health administrator who left her career to raise a family. She blends STEM into all the girl’s daily activities and explorations. JuJu, GiGi and JoJo Sabra have become award-winning inventors, professional bloggers, information product developers, website designers, coders, and best-selling Kindle authors while still tweens.

The Sabras hope to hear from other kids and parents who have also found creative ways to teach STEM at home.

Learn how, for Valentines day and beyond, to transform a tantrum into a love fest, a happier, deeper love connection with your kids without giving up or giving in!

Valentines day was recently here and at this time of year we don’t usually like to focus on the negatives in our relationships with our loved ones, but at some point in time every parent usually says (or at least thinks) My kids are driving me crazy! or they are embarrassed, again, when in public, or with friends or family, their little (or not so little) one has a temper tantrum.

Wouldn’t it be great to feel cool, calm and collected and even loving when faced with a tantrum And what’s more, what if as a Valentines day present to you (and your kids) you could stop tantrums or even prevent them.

Here are 5 tips from Tantrums 911 Parenting expert, Valerie Jampolsky for parents to transform their kids tantrums into a deeper loving connection with their kids without “giving up” or “giving in”:

1. Put on Your Oxygen Mask First: Before saying anything to your child, take a couple deep breaths and give yourself some self-empathy in the moment (e.g., I’m really frustrated, I really need things to be easier) and remind yourself of your overall parenting goals of connection, trust, mutual giving, instead of resentment, judgment and rebellion (i.e., when you’re not looking, or as teenagers, even when you are looking!)

2. Be a Video Camera, Not a Prosecuting Attorney: Observe what your child is doing as if you are a video camera, without judgment or creating enemy images of your child.

3. Look Under the Tip of the Iceberg with an Open Heart: Lovingly ask questions (not interrogate) to find out what is the real underlying need that your child is trying to meet (i.e., don’t focus on the current strategy/behavior) until your child gets that you get their needs without judgment: Are you feeling (x) because you need (y)

4. Brainstorm Solutions Together: Ask if your child is willing to hear your needs and brainstorm solutions together to meet both your needs. For preverbal kids, invite fun alternatives to meet their needs that also meets your needs or sometimes, just connecting so they get that you get and support their needs is enough (more on how to do that in the Tantrums 911 App coming soon!).

5. Open Eyes, Open Arms Open Heart: A Preventative measure: Be there with open eyes, open arms and open heart, when your kids come to you and practice these same skills when there is no crisis (I.e., share their joy of meeting a need) (e.g., Wow! You built a big tower of blocks! Was that fun).
