Owings Mills, MD, April 28, 2011 — According to a recent survey performed by Polk, the recognized expert for automotive intelligence, new car owners are now holding onto their vehicles for a record 63.9 months – 14% longer than they did at the end of 2008.

With most factory warranties lasting only 36 months, many car, truck and SUV owners are unprotected for over 2 years. And it is during this period of time that their vehicles will break down more frequently and the repairs will be more costly. Today, the average visit to the auto mechanic costs $1,200. A new transmission could cost $3,500 while a new engine could cost as much as $5,000.
