Bryant & Stratton College Offers New Degree Programs and Certificate in Western New York

Prospective students can now enroll in Medical Assisting, Financial Support Services, or Security Guard programs at the Amherst, Buffalo and Orchard Park locations

Buffalo, NY, August 15, 2013 – Bryant & Stratton College announced today the addition of two new program offerings and the expansion of one degree program in the Western New York area. All three campuses in the area, located in Amherst, Buffalo, and Orchard Park, will offer the College’s Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Assisting, Associate of Applied Science Degree in Financial Support Services and a Security Guard certificate program.

“We are very excited to be able to offer these programs at all three of our area campuses. Our mission is to provide outcomes-based education to individuals who want to start, grow or change their careers. These new programs help us bring that mission to more of the Western New York community,” said Paul Bahr, Director of the Western New York Campuses of Bryant & Stratton College.

Information events will be held for all three programs. More details about the events and the degrees are below.

AAS Medical Assisting
Individuals interested in the medical assistant field will find growing job prospects. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook estimates a 31 percent increase in employment of medical assistants between 2010 and 2020. This growth and the success of programs at the Southtowns and Buffalo campuses have spurred the decision to offer the degree program at the Amherst campus as well. Students in the Medical Assisting program participate in classroom and laboratory activities that include typing/transcription, communications, taking vital signs, microscopy and vision testing. Upon graduation, students must be able to complete the necessary external performance objectives as set forth by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). There will be an informational event on August 19 at the Amherst campus, for those individuals interested in enrolling in classes or learning more about internship and job placement opportunities. The event will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and is open to the public. A complimentary dinner will be provided during the event. The Bryant & Stratton website also includes more information about the medical assisting degree.

AAS Financial Support Services
Individuals interested in finding positions as a finance service representative, a customer service representative, a billing and posting clerk, a brokerage clerk, a loan processor, or a banking specialist should consider enrolling in the AAS Financial Support Services degree. Many of these career fields are predicted to grow by 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook. In the degree program, students will learn how to process client financial transactions, generate reports that support client needs, judge appropriate ethical behaviors that follow the laws and regulations applicable to the financial services industry and formulate useful solutions to clients’ financial and business related needs. There will be an informational event on August 27 at the campus located in Orchard Park for those individuals interested in enrolling in classes or learning more about internship and job placement opportunities. The event will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and is open to the public. More information about the financial support services degree can also be found here.

Security Guard Certificate
There are two Security Guard certification courses now available through the Bryant & Stratton College Western New York campuses. The first is an eight-hour course required by New York State as the first step in obtaining a security guard card from the New York State Department of State. Topics covered in this course include the role of security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, and ethics and conduct. The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course. Individuals interested in becoming a security guard are required to complete this pre-assignment training class only once in their career.

The second is a 16-hour course that must be completed within 90 days of employment as a security guard. The course provides the student with detailed information on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics covered in this course include the role of the security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, ethics and conduct, incident command system, and terrorism. The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.

There will be an informational event about both courses on September 10 at the Buffalo campus for those interested in enrolling in the course or learning more about job opportunities. The event will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and is open to the public. Individuals interested the Security Guard certificate can also call the campus nearest them for more information: Amherst: 716-625-6300; Buffalo: 716-884-9120; Orchard Park: 716-677-9500.

Ecotech Institute’s Power Utility Technician Program Addresses Growing Need for Talent in the Sector

More than 10,200 Power Utility Jobs were Available in the Last Year; Industry Insiders See Looming Talent Gap

Denver, Colorado, April 29, 2013 – The Power Utility industry is experiencing a massive demographic shift and employees who know both conventional grid and smart grid technology are in demand. With a growing number of retirees and new technologies cropping up, a new generation of power utility technicians is critical for the industry. Ecotech Institute, which focuses entirely on preparing students for jobs in sustainability, has been closely watching the rapidly changing sector and its Power Utility Technician program exists to fill the gap.

Ecotech Institute designed its Power Utility Technician program with input from subject matter experts who have more than 55 years of combined utility experience and know first-hand where the industry is headed. The two-year program prepares graduates for careers in power generation, with specialization in power plant operations and maintenance. Students receive immersive and hands-on training that focuses on electric utility distribution systems, grid and smart grid.

A few job titles that correlate with the Power Utility Technician program include Systems Operator, Power Plant Operator, Hydroelectric-Station Operator and Turbine Operator. According to Ecotech Institute’s Clean Jobs Index, there were 10,265 jobs advertised in the last year (March 2012 to March 2013) that match the skills taught in Ecotech’s Power Utility Technician program.

“The power utility workforce is facing changes as many utility workers are retiring and new talent is becoming vital,” says Alden Zeitz, Manager of Renewable Energy Services with Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative. “A new generation of power utility specialists that understands the grid but also grasps the concepts and application of new energy sources is critical.”

Upon successful completion of the Power Utility Technician program, graduates will be prepared to:

* Apply the fundamentals of power generation, so they can operate and maintain power plants;

* Use their knowledge of high voltage systems to maintain and operate grid infrastructure, smart grids, and distribution systems;

* Use the fundamentals of electrical theory and related knowledge to design, build, repair, calibrate and modify electrical components, circuitry, controls and machinery;

* Meet industry standards within the electrical engineering, power production and distribution fields.

In addition to the Power Utility program, Ecotech Institute offers the following:

Ecotech Institute Case Studies Included in National Wildlife Federation’s Campus Ecology Program

Comprehensive Online Database Outlines How Campuses Showcase Sustainability

Denver, Colorado, December 20, 2012 – The National Wildlife Federation’s (NWF’s) Campus Ecology program recently released 112 new case studies featuring the best green projects of 2012. These innovative efforts, from renewable energy systems to campus organic farms, can now be seen in a single online resource from NWF. The comprehensive database of case studies outlines how colleges and universities around the country, including Ecotech Institute, are making a substantial investment in the sustainability of their campuses, communities and curriculum. Ecotech Institute now has three sustainability case studies included in NWF Campus Ecology’s resources.

The NWF Campus Ecology sustainability case study database, the only resource of its kind, is available online now at thanks in part to the support of The Kendeda Fund. More than one hundred new case studies highlight efforts to dramatically reduce pollution, waste, and costs, including recycling, energy efficiency improvements, renewable energy installations and green jobs training programs.

Published each year since 1989, NWF’s Campus Ecology sustainability case study database has become an indispensable resource for students, faculty, administrators, community leaders and others interested in the role of colleges and universities in protecting the health of our planet. The database is searchable by topic, year, school, and state and includes information on each institution’s project goals, successes, challenges, funding strategies and project leaders.

“This resource helps colleges and universities learn how campuses are tackling their energy and water consumption challenges, and about their strategies to protect and restore green space. The database also gives campuses an opportunity to share their successes nationwide while receiving recognition for their commitment and hard work,” says Kristy Jones, Sr. Manager of Campus Ecology Programs, National Wildlife Federation.

NWF’s Campus Ecology program works with several hundred campuses nationwide each year on efforts to advance student leadership, reduce carbon pollution and support career education.

Since its inception in 1989, National Wildlife Federation’s Campus Ecology program has gained respect as a national leader in campus sustainability and the climate action movement. The program has long recognized the opportunities for higher education to lead society to a clean, just, and economically sound energy future. By providing tools, training and expertise, NWF has empowered students and inspired conservation stewardship on hundreds of campuses nationwide. 50 IAVA Member Veterans Receive Scholarships from Veritas Prep to Help Prepare Competitive Applications to a Wide Variety of Graduate Degree Programs

American Heroes Scholarship Recipients Illustrate Diverse Career Interests of Today’s Veterans

Malibu, CA, February 14, 2012 – Veritas Prep, a leading GMAT prep and graduate school admissions consulting firm, in partnership with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the country’s first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, announced today that it has awarded American Heroes Scholarships to 50 IAVA Member Veterans. These test preparation and admissions consulting scholarships will allow U.S. Military Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan to pursue a wide variety of interests including business, environmental science, history, law, medicine, museum studies, nutrition, psychology and public administration.

“Everyone at Veritas Prep feels honored to award the inaugural American Heroes Scholarships to 50 deserving IAVA Member Veterans. It is our privilege to help these exceptional men and women as they begin their journey to earn the professional degree they need to advance in the military or excel in a civilian career,” said Chad Troutwine, co-founder and CEO of Veritas Prep. “The recipients exemplify the diverse career interests of today’s U.S. Military Veterans. Their inspiring stories remind us that military service and graduate education are a potent combination that can lead to success in many fields. We look forward to furthering our partnership with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America to create life-changing opportunities for service members and veterans.”

“Veritas Prep is a national leader in supporting new veterans and has stepped up in a big way to show veterans that they have our backs. They understand the immense potential of this New Greatest Generation. These scholarships will provide valuable opportunities so new veterans can be at their very best throughout the graduate school admissions process. Education and employment are two of our top priorities at IAVA, so this partnership with Veritas Prep is especially exciting,” said IAVA Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff.

“Since separating from the Army, I’ve decided that I’d like to put the experience and skills I gained in the military to use in a career in business. While military service helped me develop leadership skills, to become a business leader I need the management skills that an MBA would provide,” said Shahriar Chowdhury, former Captain, U.S. Army. “My goal is to go to a good business school, but to do that I need to score well on the GMAT. I’d wanted to take a prep course, but held off because of the cost. I’m extremely grateful to the Veritas Prep scholarship program because now I can better prepare for the GMAT and hopefully achieve the score I need to get into a top program.”

“The four years I spent on active duty as an army medic introduced me to the everyday and often extreme demands of what being a healthcare provider entails. From these experiences, I found my calling to become a physician and scientist, and now wish to delve into the challenging, yet inspiring, world of research and medicine,” said Cameron Waites, former Sergeant in the U.S. Army and current National Institutes of Health research fellow. “But before this dream has any chance of becoming a reality, one particularly important challenge remains on my horizon – getting accepted into medical school. Fortunately, the scholarship from Veritas Prep will provide expert guidance and support, helping me to prepare a strong application.”

Of the 50 scholarships awarded, 31 IAVA Member Veterans will receive a free Veritas Prep GMAT prep course, either in-person or online, and Veritas Prep’s full suite of 15 GMAT course books and extensive resources; 19 will receive six hours of graduate school admissions consulting with a Veritas Prep admissions expert related to the graduate program of their choice. In addition to the scholarships announced today, Veritas Prep is extending discounts to all qualified IAVA Member Veterans; offering 50 percent off Veritas Prep GMAT courses and 25 percent off admissions consulting services.
