Lufft Introduces New Non-Invasive Road Weather Sensor For Smart Traffic Applications

Fellbach, Baden-Wurttemberg (realtimepressrelease) April 12, 2017 – After a year of development work, a new generation of Lufft stationary street weather sensors is now ready. The StaRWIS, which is installed at a measuring distance of 5.5 meters above the road, is based on an award-winning and innovative LED technology. This is already used with the MARWIS mobile sensor. After introducing the first non-contact road sensor NIRS31 in 2011, the company is now consistently continuing the development of this technology.

SUITABLE FOR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT APPLICATIONS IN CITIES AND ON BRIDGES

The easy-to-install and compact StaRWIS is a new stationary sensor for road weather information systems. This is based on a non-invasive, spectroscopic measuring principle. The sensor is particularly suitable for hard-to-reach or critical locations, which make installation on the ground difficult or impossible. This includes, for example, bridges or city streets.

StaRWIS provides the values ​​of road temperature, dew point temperature, water film height, road conditions (dry, wet, ice, snow, critical and chemically wet), relative humidity, the percentage of ice and friction. In November 2017, a firmware update will expand the capabilities to include the freezing point temperature and dew point density.

StaRWIS can be installed at a height between five and six meters. Thus, it has a shorter range than the road weather sensor NIRS31-UMB, which can be installed flexibly at distances to the surface of 15 to 50 meters. The innovation therefore complements the portfolio of the Lufft sensors for winter services, smart cities and traffic management applications with a more cost-effective and compact model.

NO COMPROMISES ON ACCURACY, THANKS TO MARWIS LED TECHNOLOGY

The new StaRWIS road weather sensor is based on the same Lufft LED technology as the MARWIS mobile sensor. In this way, it achieves the highest precision that opto-electronic weather sensors are capable of attaining. Like the MARWIS, Bluetooth can be used to wirelessly control the configuration as well as the data transfer. Alternatively, a connection via RS485 and CAN bus is also possible.

“StaRWIS provides all measurements accurately and reliably. It even exceeded our expectations,” reported the first Canadian tester.

Sensor Manufacturer Lufft Ranks Among The Top 100 Companies

Fellbach, Baden-Wurttemberg (realtimepressrelease) June 27, 2016 – For the twenty-third time, the TOP 100 – Germany’s most innovative small and medium-sized companies – are acclaimed. This year, G. Lufft Mess- und Regeltechnik GmbH belongs to this innovation elite. The Fellbach company previously took part in a demanding, scientific selection process. Innovation management and innovation success were examined. The mentor of the innovation competition, Ranga Yogeshwar, honors the top innovator Lufft at the German SME Summit on 24 June 2016 in Essen.

MARWIS Product Film recognized with international prizes

Fellbach, Baden-Wurttemberg (realtimepressrelease) May 27, 2016 – For all those who haven’t watched the film about the advantages of the mobile road sensor MARWIS yet, it’s now time the latest: A few days ago, two international awards went to the creators of the MARWIS film. They originate from the two most important festivals of the independent and short film industry. Thus, the filmmakers from NCP Film, whom Lufft again gave its trust, have continued with their success of the last two years, in which their productions for the sensor manufacturer were awarded with seven international film prizes in total.

With the MARWIS product film published in March 2015, NCP Film once again convinced international film juries. It became known on May 11, 2016 the latest, when the World Media Festival in Hamburg took place and the winner trophies changed hands. For the third time in a row, a Lufft production from NCP Film was amongst the winners there. The jury honored “MARWIS” with the highest prize level: the intermedia-globe Gold Award.

Almost in parallel, a WorldFest Houston Platinum Remi award in the category “Advertising/ Promotional” went to NCP for the same project. This represents the most valuable prize as well.

Lufft has collaborated with the filmmakers of NCP Film for two years now. The first joint project was about a new handheld instrument series. It was rewarded with an intermedia-globe Gold in Hamburg and a Platinum Remi Award in Houston. The second production has dealt with the Lufft I-BOX, a device allowing different climate sensors to be integrated into a measuring network and taking over different functions.

Lufft wins innovation award of Baden-Württemberg

Fellbach, Baden-Wurttemberg (realtimepressrelease) November 17, 2015 – The measurement and control technology company Lufft was selected as one winner of the “Dr. Rudolf Eberle Prize” at “Haus der Wirtschaft” in Stuttgart. The award includes prize money of 10.000 Euros. With the innovation of its new mobile road sensor MARWIS, the company from Fellbach triumphed over a field of 77 competitors. Peter Hofelich, the state secretary of the Ministry of Finance in Baden-Wurttemberg, presented the prize to Lufft managing directors Klaus Hirzel and Axel Schmitz-Hubsch. Since 1985, the Baden-Wurttemberg innovation award has celebrated medium-sized companies in the region who have developed outstanding technological innovations in the fields of industry, trade, and technological services.

At the prize ceremony, Lufft manager Klaus Hirzel explained: “Being inaugurated into the line of exceptional and creative developers in this state with this award fills us all with pride. The MARWIS sensor is a result of exceptional engineering expertise and a business plan focused on innovation rather than turnover. In doing so, we followed our credo: global thinking, advanced development, punctual and error-free availability.” Lufft is going to invest the prize money in the research and development of innovative future projects.

The innovative road sensor MARWIS impressed the 12 members of the expert jury, who are elected by the Ministry of Finance from the fields of business and technology. The mobile sensor was introduced in 2014 and is a road weather information sensor that detects road conditions and environmental data reliably. Installed on vehicles, MARWIS records data in real time and straight from the car.

Besides road surfaces (dry, humid, frozen, snow-capped and critically or chemically wet), the sensor records data such as road surface temperature, water film height, dew point temperature, ice friction, and humidity. In doing so, the sensor increases road safety, offers evidence in the case of traffic accidents, aids route planning, and enhances the efficiency of winter service.

Latter will be investigated more precisely. The wholly Lufft owned subsidiary MICKS MSR GmbH which is specialized on meteorological all-in-one systems in the field of transport, received the order to be part of a leading-edge project of the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt). The order serves the research and development of a distance-based prediction of slippery roads and thus the advancement of the winter road maintenance.
