Long Island Authors and Writers Society Presents The Story Behind the Story at Hofstra University

Three Long Island Authors will talk about their influences in writing their books.

Hempstead, NY, USA (September 8, 2014) — Three members of LIAWS (Long Island Authors and Writers Society) will take to the stage at Hoftsra University’s Guthart Cultural Center Theater and deliver their story about what led them to write their respective books. It takes place on Wednesday September 17, 2014, 7:00 PM and is part of the organization’s ongoing workshops on the craft of writing that take place throughout Long Island. There will be a question and answer session following the presentation.

Authors Mary Beth Czubay, Yvonne Capitelli , and Tom Gahan are the presenters for Long Island Authors and Writers Society’s inaugural Story Behind the Story presentation.

Mary Beth Czubay shares the story of what inspired her to write her book, Easy Out On Third-Raising A Child With Special Needs. She will take the audience on an uplifting and inspirational journey of what it is like to try to live an ordinary life while facing extraordinary circumstances on a daily basis and overcoming obstacles.

Yvonne Capitelli envisioned writing children’s books while growing up on Long Island, NY. She achieved her dream, wrote Daria Rose and the Day She Chose, and became a ten-time award winning children’s author. She was inspired by her daughter to start writing positive character building books that motivate children to make good choices, be determined, and take control of their own happiness. Capitelli is also a children’s motivational speaker.

Notable eastern Long Island resident Tom Gahan is the author of Harmony Bay, a well-received novel that became required reading at several high-schools. His premiere novel earned him a place on an international list of authors — “Writers You Should Get to Know.” He has worked as a journalist and freelance writer. Gahan will talk about the many influences and characters from around Long Island that inspired him to write Harmony Bay.

“Hofstra University’s Department of English (hofstra.edu/English) offers undergraduate concentrations in English and American literature, creative writing, and publishing. It also offers an MFA in Creative Writing and an MA in English Literature, as well as a Summer Writers Program that just completed its 40th year, says Ginny Greenberg, Public Relations Director at Hofstra. “Hofstra’s Great Writers, Great Readings series (hofstra.edu/gwgr), started in 2004, brings award-winning writers across the genres to campus to engage students in intimate writing workshops and readings.”

Hofstra students and the general public are welcome to come and hear The Story Behind the Story. Riverhead, NY (November 11, 2013) — The Long Island Authors and Writers Society (http://www.LIAWS.org) presents a free workshop, “Using the Irrefutable Laws of Marketing to Promote Your Writing” as the third part of a three part series of workshops showing authors and writers how to promote themselves and their work.

The workshop takes place Wednesday, November 20, 2013, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM at the Suffolk Community College downtown Riverhead campus (Culinary Arts School), 20 East Main Street, Riverhead, NY 11901, Room 222.

The LIAWS sponsored lecture will be given by LIAWS president, Tom Gahan. Gahan’s talk addresses the often asked question, “How do I market my book?” The presentation will examine what motivates buyers from a social science perspective. These proven methods apply to all levels – whether a writer is seeking an agent, a publisher, pitching a story to an editor, or an author who wishes to increase their book sales. In a broad scope this workshop applies to selling anything – to anyone. Find out what works and why at this free LIAWS event.

“This fun and informative workshop offers insights to participants about themselves and what influences people in making decisions. I’ve given this presentation to a variety of audiences,” says Gahan, who is the marketing director at an international publishing company.

Authors of children’s, young adult and family friendly books will sign books and meet readers during Harbes Family Farm Sweet Corn Festival on July 13.

Mattituck, NY (June 21, 2013) — Amid an array of singing hayrides, pig races, farm animals, antique tractors, beekeeping exhibits and bushels of what has been called by Newsday, the ‘best corn on Long Island’, author members of Long Island Authors and Writers Society will be at Harbes Family Farm in Mattituck on Saturday, July 13 from 11 AM until 3 PM during Harbes Farms Sweet Corn Festival.

Included in the lineup of LIAWS authors are: ten-time award winning children’s author and children’s motivational speaker, Yvonne Capitelli, children’s book author Dr. Loraine Alderman, an advocate for children with learning disabilities who recently received Book of the Year Award, on-air radio personality and children’s book author, Lisa A. Dabrowski, elementary educator Valerie Pfundstein the author of Veterans, Heroes In Our Neighborhood, and author Tom Gahan, whose novel Harmony Bay was influenced by places and events on eastern Long Island during the American Revolution and became required reading at several Long Island high schools.

The author’s works represent several subjects including character-building, farm life, history, science, and community relations. “We feel this is a good matchup of writing talents and titles with this venue. We look forward to meeting writers and aspiring authors from around Long Island,” says Tom Gahan, president of the not-for-profit LIAWS that mentors and develops writers at all levels.

For adults the farm also features a vineyard and a 100-year-old barn for wine tasting where Harbes award-winning wines can be sampled.

“I too am delighted to be part of the annual Sweet Corn festival this year,” added Dabrowski. “As a North Fork native, I am very proud of my own family’s agricultural heritage and feel that it is important we continue our farming traditions on the East End. Harbes Farm is playing a vital role in doing that.”

Bayshore, NY (March 27, 2013) — Long Island Authors and Writers Society (http://www.LIAWS.org) presents How to Overcome the Fear of Writing and Writer’s Block with Jean Summit-Riker. The event takes place at 7 PM on Wednesday, April 17 at Barnes & Noble, 842 Sunrise Highway, Bayshore, NY 11706.

Author and hypno-therapist Jean Summit-Riker will give a lively talk about the fears associated with writing and how to overcome those and other fears and writer’s block. Jean is the author of Forever Is Still a Long, Long Time. She is a Life Coach, Motivational Speaker and Consulting Hypnotist with a private practice in Patchogue, NY.

The evening’s program includes select readings by LIAWS author members Jill Sooley, Dr. Benedict Baglio and Dr. Harris Cohen.

A former public relations executive, she is now devoted full time to writing, and is currently at work on a third novel. She is a member of the LIAWS Board of Directors.

He has also authored a book on educational reform. New Organization for Authors and Writers Formed

Society will support and encourage writers and authors at all levels on Long Island, New York.

Riverhead, NY, USA (January 18, 2013) — A new organization dedicated to enhancing and promoting the works of writers and authors on Long Island has just been launched, Tom Gahan, president of the newly formed Long Island Authors and Writers Society (LIAWS (http://www.LIAWS.org), announced today.

The group is committed to supporting the creative talents of local writers and authors, while offering resources on the business end of publishing. “Writing and publishing are very turbulent industries, especially in the age of self-publishing, the rise in the popularity of e-readers and the subsequent troubled finances of the nation’s booksellers and traditional publishers, both large and small,” says Mr. Gahan. “It’s critical for us as a community of professionals to come together to shape the future of the industry and maintain its integrity.”

Long Island is home to countless writers and authors and yet no single organization exists to provide all levels of the craft with resources to further their goals, according to Mr. Gahan. Long Island Authors to Hold Vineyard Book Fair

More than 20 of Long Island’s best authors will be at Martha Clara Vineyards on Sunday, April 22 from noon until 4 PM.

Riverhead, NY, February 15, 2012 — Long Island Authors’ Group http://www.longislandauthorsgroup.org, will have an array of authors whose works include fiction and non-fiction Adult, Young Adult, and Children’s Books at Martha Clara Vineyards in Riverhead, Long Island, NY.

Admission to the book signing event is free and open to the public. It will feature live entertainment by “Hart & Soul”. Everyone who attends the book fair will be eligible to enter a free drawing for an Amazon Kindle e-Reader, courtesy of the Long Island Authors’ Group.

“Martha Clara Vineyards has been the perfect venue to host our annual book fair. What a great way to spend the afternoon, sipping on wine, meeting new and exciting authors, and relaxing with a really good book,” said LIAG’s president Kerriann Flanagan-Brosky. “Our authors consist of commercially published, small press published and self-published. They bring a unique diversity to the world of literature, and we’re happy to showcase them there.”
