Innovative Drug Discovery Business, Biosortia Pharmaceuticals, Lands Two Health Care Veterans

Kurt Dieck formerly SVP of Strategy and Business Execution at Cardinal Health, will lead early stage drug discovery business at Biosortia Pharmaceuticals. Dieck was named President and CEO in November 2012 and has quickly identified other key executives, including Dr. Guy Carter, former Natural Product head at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, as his Chief Science Officer. In conjunction, other collaboration partners have joined the team, including NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), NCI (National Cancer Institute) and key universities, to strategically accelerate the development of novel drug leads in the therapeutic areas of cancer, infectious diseases, inflammation and neurological disorders. Biosortia Pharmaceuticals has seen promising early results with dozens of novel compounds having already been requested, and are under evaluation with NCI and Eli Lilly.

Dieck has spent nearly 30 years in healthcare, including 18 years at Arthur Andersen as a global equity partner and then 10 years with Cardinal Health, a Fortune 20 public company, as a senior executive; there he worked with a broad spectrum of partners, including brand pharmaceutical manufacturers, throughout the supply chain. Dr. Guy Carter has over 30 years of experience working in pharmaceutical R&D, primarily in the discovery and development of microbial natural products. He previously was the leader of natural products drug discovery at Wyeth Research, as head of the Chemical Technologies Department.

Industry observers have commented that late-stage R&D pipelines are not providing Pharma with the desired revenue growth the market is expecting. Therefore, large Pharma is evolving the way it performs R&D in order to optimize efficiency and to boost patent cliff defenses. These changes require shifting from relying solely on in-house chemistry-based R&D to acquiring and licensing external technologies and natural products based compounds in various stages of development. The team has also focused on agreements with strategic collaboration partners as vital components to the strategy. Biosortia has recently entered into several collaboration agreements with NOAA, Analyticon and exclusive harvesting relationships, just to name a few. Several others will be advanced by the end of January. Biosortia’s cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) with NOAA’s Center for Human Health Risk at Hollings Marine Laboratory provides a 5-year framework for research and development regarding the analysis and purification of novel bioactive compounds. According to NOAA’s Technology Partnerships Office, “Success will result in the commercial development of new and unique chemical compounds from the sea which have benefits to human health, either through disease prevention or new treatments for disease.”

Dr. Peter Moeller, NOAA’s Research Scientist who leads the Toxins Natural Products Program stated after analyzing fractions of Biosortia’s biomass, “Coupling NOAA’s mission of characterizing toxins affecting environmental and/or human health with Biosortia’s drug discovery focus turns one man’s toxin into another’s chemotherapeutic. The microorganisms analyzed in the Biosortia biomass identified more unique activity than I have seen in my 30 year career. The volumes achieved from a single harvest delivered an equivalent of 30 years of accumulation. This could materially change the landscape for natural products drug discovery research.”

As of December 31, 2012, Biosortia has identified more than 30 bioactive candidate compounds (hits) from a fresh water eutrophic lake consortium. Therapeutic areas of focus include treatments for cancer, infectious diseases, inflammation and neurological disorders. In addition, more than a dozen of its patent protected compounds are in initial evaluation stage within Eli Lilly’s Open Innovation Drug Discovery Program.

Enabling microRNA Discoveries – 250th Peer-Reviewed Publication Made Possible By µparaflo Custom Microarray Technology

Jun 09 2011 /RTPR/ – LC Sciences, a life sciences company leading the development of innovative microRNA (miRNA) analysis and discovery technologies, announced today the publication of over 250 peer-reviewed studies using the company’s microarray service for analyzing miRNA expression profiles. These studies, by leading researchers in the field, represent significant steps toward realizing these small regulatory RNA’s potential as biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

MiRNAs have proven to be an extremely important part of the gene expression regulation mechanism of a wide variety of cellular processes. This is evident in the amount of relevant findings by LC Sciences’ customers being translated into published reports and the diverse range of study areas that these publications encompass: cancer research, neuroscience, cardiovascular research, reproductive biology, plant science, microbiology, immunology and stem cell research. LC Sciences’ miRNA profiling service, powered by its µParaflo® custom microarray technology, provides quick, reliable, fully analyzed datasets enabling researchers to immediately move forward with groundbreaking research.

The miRNA field is still nascent, and it is advancing rapidly. The race to discovery has produced a continuous stream of new miRNA sequences as well as routine revisions of inaccurate or incomplete sequences. This fluidity has caused many microarrays with static content to fall away and has fueled reports of the wholesale replacement of microarrays by new methods such as RNA-Seq. But the nimble, customizable format of the µParaflo® array has given it staying power, not only by enabling it to keep current with all known miRNAs, but also by making use of data generated by RNA-Seq. These custom arrays have benefited from RNA-sequencing generating novel content that other arrays are unable to capture and take advantage of.

The 250th study, entitled “Wolbachia uses host microRNAs to manipulate host gene expression and facilitate colonization of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti.” appeared in the May 31st issue of PNAS and was one of a group of articles published recently by LC Sciences’ customers describing microarray expression analysis of miRNAs recently discovered through RNA Sequencing.

Researchers at the University of Queensland, Australia studied the underlying mechanisms of host manipulation by a widespread endosymbiont. Using microarrays, they show that the miRNA profile of the mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is significantly altered by a life-shortening strain of W. pipientis bacteria. This is extremely important work as introduction of Wolbachia into mosquitoes has been proposed as a method for malaria control. They found that a host miRNA (aae-miR-2940) is induced after W. pipientis infection in both mosquitoes and cell lines.

This study illustrates the versatility of µParaflo® from a couple of perspectives. First, mosquito, an important though non-model species was the target of interest here and mosquito arrays, as well as arrays from any of the 153 species listed in the miRBase public sequence database, are readily available from LC Sciences. Second, custom content (novel miRNA sequences from an earlier sequencing study on the same species) was quickly integrated into the content of the insect array providing an even richer expression dataset. Though all the previously described, known insect miRNAs were also present on the arrays, several custom sequences were significantly differentially expressed in infected mosquitoes and a custom sequence turned out to be one that became a focus of the investigation. Dr. Sassan Asgari, lead researcher for the study, commented that microarrays “…provided an affordable approach to the study of differential expression of small RNAs and miRNAs in particular.”

“We are very excited about the announcement of the 250th peer-viewed publication by one of our microarray customers,” says Chris Hebel, VP of Business Development at LC Sciences. “We were the first to provide a microarray expression profiling service for miRNA back in 2005 and proud to be still going strong in the face of rapidly advancing technologies, while many other less adaptable arrays, have fallen away. Despite the apparent advantages of new technologies such as RNA-Seq, microarrays have been the gene expression workhorse for many years and continue to be a robust, affordable solution. High-throughput RNA sequencing is still significantly more expensive and it won’t be until there is sufficient multiplexing of samples when we finally do reach a cost approaching that of microarrays. Of course more samples means less coverage per sample, and I think we’re still trying to figure out just how much coverage is required for robust expression data from deep sequencing and therefore what level of multiplexing can ultimately be reached. Meanwhile, RNA-Seq has become an amazing tool for discovery of novel miRNAs and continues to provide new content for our custom microarrays.”

Milastomer, which is particularly suited for the automotive industry where it is used for interior trims including dash boards, doors and headliners, is based on Mitsui’s years of expertise and experience in plastics and synthetic rubber manufacturing. Unlike traditional rubber, Milastomer does not need compounding or vulcanization by the end user and every grade of Milastomer can be molded or extruded similar to polyethylene and polypropylene. Also like PVC, Milastomer has excellent moldability when processed on calendering machines.

Onondaga Nation and Brooklyn-based Ecologic Solutions Announce Green Partnership

MAR 31, 2011 /RTPR/ — Brooklyn, NY — Onondaga Nation and Brooklyn-based Ecologic Solutions today announced a historic, Native American-green business partnership to boost the company’s efforts to rid workplaces of toxic cleaners and replace them with sustainable alternatives.

Under the terms of the partnership, Onondaga Nation (www.onondaganation.org) has agreed to become the second largest shareholder in EcoLogic Solutions (www.ecologicsolutions.com), a leading supplier of natural, plant-based cleaning supplies for restaurants, hotels, schools, office buildings, and other commercial users. EcoLogic Solutions will use the investment to create jobs and expand current operations, while developing new products and approaches to eliminate harmful cleaning supplies from workplaces.

APT Starts New Promotion Drive for ADMER Pipe Coating Solutions

Advanced Polymer Trading FZC recently entered into a broad sales and distribution agreement with Mitsui Chemicals Europe to market Mitsui’s ADMER adhesive resin. As a result of that agreement APT have started a new campaign to promote ADMER as a steel pipe coating solution.

Advanced Polymer Trading (APT), an international trading company specialising in the world wide trade of rubber, plastics and petrochemicals, has launched a new campaign to promote ADMER as a steel pipe coating solution. ADMER coated on steel pipes protects them from corrosion and weathering and so assures a long operating life time.

Earlier this year APT entered into an agreement with Mitsui Chemicals Europe to market, sell and distribute Mitsui’s adhesive resin ADMER. ADMER adhesive resin is a functionally modified polyolefin that serves as a tie layer in multilayer applications including steel pipes.

ADMER can be used to coat steel pipes using a three layer PE process (3LPE) or a three layer PP process (3LPP). For 3LPE coating the epoxy primer is applied onto the preheated steel pipe to provide an oxygen barrier. Next ADMER PE adhesive is applied to create a strong bond between the epoxy layer and the top coat PE which is applied to provide mechanical protection. The structure of 3LPP coatings corresponds to that of 3LPE, combining an epoxy primer, a PP top coat and a PP adhesive.

The polypropylene (PP) coating is particularly suitable for applications where high service temperature and excellent mechanical protection are mandatory. For both types of coatings ADMER is compatible with any kind of commercially available epoxy primers and polyethylene/ polypropylene top coats.

Using ADMER in three layer PE coatings for pipelines has been possible since the 1980’s, now after three decades it is a popular solutionsaid Mr. Hamid Amiri, APT’s Managing Director. “And it is increasingly replacing single layer fusion bonded epoxy coatings.”

As a tie resin, ADMER can be used in many different applications and with many different materials including Polyamide (PA), EVOH, Polystyrene (PS), Polyester (PET, PETG), Polycarbonate (PC), Polyolefins (PP, PE) and of course epoxy.
